WEDNESDAY 02 SEPTEMBER
PHAT KAT - 30 YEARS DETROIT HIPHOP

PHAT KAT is one of Detroit’s most respected MCs, a key figure in the city’s underground hip-hop scene for more than three decades.

As SOUNDS celebrates its 40th anniversary, Welcome To Belgium and Da Bluefunk District join forces to welcome one of the artists who has embodied more than 30 years of Detroit hip-hop.

This special concert celebrates the legacy of 1st Down, the legendary duo formed by Phat Kat and producer Jon Doe, later known worldwide as J Dilla. Recorded in the mid-1990s for Payday Records, these tracks captured the birth of a sound that would forever influence hip-hop production: stripped-back drums, soulful samples, deep funk grooves and uncompromising lyricism.
Recently released in its complete original form, 1st Down finally shines a light on this essential chapter of Detroit music history, presenting the recordings exactly as they were originally intended.

If you know the Detroit sound, you already know what to expect. This isn’t a beat night, but it might just feel like one. The grooves, the drums, the swing and that unmistakable Detroit feel are everywhere.

Warm-up DJ set: Cris Prolific
Live: Phat Kat
Aftershow DJ set: Defi-J

A night celebrating one of hip-hop’s greatest musical legacies.

BEATS by Welcome To Belgium – Episode 8
REPLAY NOW AVAILABLE ON MIXCLOUD

Missed the live session? The full replay of Episode 8 is now online.

For this eighth edition of BEATS, DEFI J and DJ ESCH took over the turntables at What Is Hip Radio for an evening dedicated to beat culture, digging and vinyl selection.
No laptops. No shortcuts. Just records, knowledge and years of passion behind every transition.
From golden era hip hop to obscure beat tapes, jazz samples, soulful grooves and deep cuts, both selectors shared part of the musical universe that continues to inspire their listening, collecting and DJ practice.
And DJ ESCH came with a surprise. Alongside his vinyl selection, he brought a Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II, using the sampler and groovebox to extend the conversation between records, beats and spontaneous creation.
A reminder that beat culture is not only about production. It is also about research, transmission, curiosity and the stories hidden inside records.
Big thanks to DEFI J, DJ ESCH, What Is Hip Radio, and everyone who joined us in the studio or tuned in online.

🎧 Full replay available on Mixcloud.
