I had the privilege of representing Defensive Solutions Australia at the Employer Connection Day hosted by Asset College at their Logan Campus.It was a fantastic opportunity to meet the next generation of security professionals and share the realities of an industry that demands professionalism, resilience and a commitment to continual learning.Drawing on more than 25 years of experience across the security industry, together with my service in the Australian Defence Force, I spoke about how both careers have shaped the way we train, mentor and develop security professionals. The military taught me discipline, accountability and decision-making under pressure. The security industry taught me adaptability, communication and protecting people in complex, ever-changing environments.At Defensive Solutions Australia, we combine these lessons to deliver practical, realistic training that prepares people for the challenges they’ll face on the job, not just to meet minimum standards, but to build confidence, competence and leadership.Thank you to Asset College for the invitation and for investing in the future of our industry. One of the performance validation drills we use in our workshops is the El Presidente, often called El Prez.Developed by Jeff Cooper in the 1970s, reportedly while training a presidential security detail, the El Prez was designed as a performance validation drill rather than a tactical exercise. Decades later, it remains one of the most recognised pistol standards because it measures the integration of multiple fundamental skills under time pressure—not just speed.The El Prez evaluates:* Turn and draw efficiency* Grip index from the holster* Visual processing and target acquisition* Recoil control and management* Target transitions* Reload proficiency* Accuracy* Consistency and accountability under time pressureLike any good validation drill, it provides objective feedback—not opinions. It identifies strengths, exposes limitations, and establishes a measurable baseline that can be tracked over time.As a general performance guide (while maintaining acceptable accuracy):* <12 seconds — Developing* 8–10 seconds — Competent* 6–8 seconds — Proficient* 4–6 seconds — Advanced* Sub-4 seconds — Elite-level performanceOn our workshops, drills like the El Prez aren’t about chasing arbitrary times or feeding the ego. If you carry an issued holster and weapon, what’s some ways you get dry reps in at home?There are always limitations with issued, non-modified gear. I set my shot timer to a 0.81-second par time and ran the same drill with two different duty holsters.Interestingly, I was only slightly slower with Holster B overall. I still made the par time with both holsters.That said… there were a few reps with Holster B that were painfully slow—and, for the sake of my own ego, I decided they didn’t need to make it into this post. Disregard holsters for a second,@notionalgunfighters and the @thedapperdig have some really good breakdowns on how they’ve followed the issued non modified rule but still made their set up work for them.For those interested:Holster A: Safariland ALSHolster B: Safariland SLSWhat I noticed was that the ALS lets me establish a better initial connection on the gun much earlier in the draw, and the thumb release feels far more natural. With the SLS, the thumb movement required to release the hood is more awkward, which made my draws less consistent.Does that make the SLS a bad holster? Not at all.Many police, military and security personnel don’t get to choose their duty holster. The important thing is understanding your equipment, identifying its strengths and limitations, and training with it until your draw is consistent under pressure.The gear matters—but the reps matter more.For those running issued holsters, what slows you down the most? by @defsolaus
