COB vs. EOD

Business acronyms. They make lengthy emails easier to digest, leading to better communication, and make you feel a little like you’re communicating the instructions for a covert mission. However, acronyms can also be confusing and frustrating. Have you ever received an email from your boss or colleague asking to have a task completed by COB or EOD? If you’ve felt confused or nervous, you’ll miss some unspoken deadline -- you’re not alone.

COB

COB stands for “close of business.” It refers to the end of a business day and the close of the financial markets in New York City, which define U.S. business hours. It’s used in business communications to set a deadline for a task to be completed by 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST).

EOD

EOD stands for “end of the day.” (and not End of Delta or End of the Days .) It’s used to set a deadline for a task that should be complete by the end of the business day -- typically 5:00 PM. When no time zone is provided, the end of the day is relative to the sender’s time zone.

Lets circle back at EOD!
Let's circle back at EOD!

When in doubt, zoom out.

When a season ends and another season begins, the shift brings many new changes. The most obvious maybe the weather but certainly not the only deviations that occur. Marketers worth their salt all know web traffic changes also occur in conjunction with seasonal changes.

The degree to which seasonal changes affect a website depends on various factors—your industry, the seasonal products/services offering, and how well you market through the slow times will contribute to the ups and downs.

Regardless of what you sell, every business will experience ebbs and flows in web activity due to seasonal and campaign efficacy. It's crucial to be aware of these traffic changes regardless of the business space. If unprepared, you may have difficulty effectively managing marketing channel efficacy, website performance, the team's expectations, and business results.

Understanding how traffic oscillates throughout the year is crucial as it will help you prepare for the busy part of the week and anticipate those slow days. So when in doubt, zoom out. Compare the trends, learn from historical performance, and make adjustments to your tactics.

And while doing so, take a moment to recognize overall performance improvement. It's essential to take a step back and appreciate how far you have come because it's easy to lose sight of what's important when you're caught in the daily grind. Take a deep breath and inhale.

Also, it's never a good idea to put all your marketing eggs in one basket. Spread yourself out; don't rely on one source of traffic, one source of income, and anything for that matter. 🙌 taken in Defy Digital Marketing by @defydigital

#gme & r/wallstreetbets

Even if you are not a day trader, you may have been transfixed for days by Reddit users' saga and crusade involving the video game retailer GameStop.⁣
⁣
The short version: Several Wall Street professionals bet that GameStop stock's price will fall and are smugly confident they're right. A Reddit group called Wall Street Bets has been trying to prove them wrong or mess with them by organizing to drive up GameStop's share price. The company's shares are going haywire. It's all weird, and there are no heroes in this tale. (Check out Matt Levine's column in Bloomberg Opinion about this.)⁣
⁣
When we see the Redditors versus the Wall Street, we are reminded of how being online has changed how we relate to one another. There is no bright line between internet life and real life.⁣
⁣
Wall Street Bets exhibits the same kind of engaged, hyper-online social momentum that helped drive Donald Trump and Andrew Yang's presidential candidacies, the relentless force behind the K-Pop fans who make sure their favorite bands' trend online, and those who engage in political activism.⁣
⁣
The GameStop campaign's swarming behavior, unity around a common cause, and inside jokes — like the one about chicken tenders — have similar mechanics as the gaggles who harass gay and transgender video creators on TikTok or jokers who got a research ship named "Boaty McBoatface," a few years ago. And to be clear, stock trading campaigns aren't the same as harassing teenagers.⁣
⁣
Ryan Broderick, an internet culture writer, wrote in his Garbage Day newsletter that the GameStop saga showed the similarities between #socialmedia and the stock market. "If you can create enough hype around something, through memes, conspiracy theories, and harassment campaigns, you can manifest it into reality."⁣
⁣
Humans adapt to online life in ways that sometimes feel thrilling — and other times nihilistic and horrifying.⁣ It's time to weed through social media's negative stigma and hone in on the positives, elevate brand goals and business strategies!
