The second-quarter issue of the Degutierre Quarterly went out to subscribers this week. This issue of the quarterly explores rebirth, examining different ways this theme shows up in our lives.

This issue, it is the quarterly's distinct honor to present an interview with Tyler Wetherall ( @tylerwrites ) discussing her recent novel, Amphibian. The book, a tremendous literary accomplishment, is a spell-binding coming-of-age tale which proved impossible to put down. Thank you Tyler for agreeing to the interview!

And we are joined again by the inimitable @sara.anderson.photo, who contributes a remarkable photographic meditation on the subject of Rebirth.

Today’s latergram gives an update on the Degutierre Quarterly. Subscribers received this issue over the summer.

The summer issue focuses on courage, and wants to shine a light on the different ways that courage takes shape in our lives. As one might gather from the cover, designed in part by Seth Grym @grymlife , the issue’s theme was inspired heavily by the #womanlifefreedom movement in Iran and features a short story that takes place in modern-day Tehran which hinges on a single act of courage.

There are also contributions by friends Kevin Capp @groverlewisfilm and Nils Aksel.

In the snow-swept mountains of Myoko Akakura, a skier and snowboarder stumble one day upon a mystical tunnel. The friends pause and exchange a glance: they have heard stories of this tunnel.

The tunnel has long been rumored to be a portal between the worlds of dream and reality, a place of balance between constancy and change (fueki ryukō).

With a solemn nod to one another, the friends decide to enter, and they are overcome with the feeling that something important is happening—that something they did not know was missing is soon to manifest.

During their passage, they are struck by the near-silence of the tunnel. A cleansing wind washes over them and captures their breath, beginning a process of transformation. This is no ordinary wind. It is a wind of fūkyo, the “wind madness,” which generates an artistic dedication to aesthetic beauty that appears to others like an obsession.

Indeed, this tunnel separates the world of dreams from reality, for in the dream world they experience angelic Japanese powder snow amidst raw, unspoiled nature. They glide through deep dreams as if swimming, and set aside the real, waking world.

As they emerge from the tunnel, majestic mountains unfold before them and a cloud-strewn sky spans above, promising yet more feather-light snow.

In the moment of passage, they shed part of their former selves and become more than just an ordinary skier and snowboarder. There is a sense of relief as the fūkyo wind finishes winnowing away their shiftless nature and leaves in its place the “wind-madness” obsession with the art of gliding over snow.

Carrying this transformation forward into their everyday lives, their hearts are profoundly marked by their fleeting moments in the dream world.

The two friends have each become a JapowBoss. The title
“JapowBoss” is an honor given only to the few who can find the tunnel, given to those who pass through this tunnel, honoring those who have glimpsed the raw beauty of the dream world and come away with a sense of meaning, heightened awareness, and greater intention behind what they do going forward in their every day lives.

She passes his test, but what calamity follows on the heels of one who learns so young to silence her heart's protests?
