Today, I officially became Dr. Pompey. While I was the one that walked across the stage, this degree belongs to the women who built me. To my mom, Danita Speaks and my grandma, Inez Speaks: I felt you with me during each late night/early morning and every difficult chapter. Your spirits fueled my persistence. You were my first teachers and my greatest inspiration. I hope I’ve made you proud, and I definitely know you were with me today (y’all check out the name card of my friend/cohort member who sat beside me during commencement!!! 😭😭😭) SN: I was able to pull myself together before we walked into the arena to be seated. 🥹💜

To my amazing husband, Reginald Pompey, and my boys Jordan and Xander: thank you for your patience and for the many sacrifices you made throughout this journey. Team Pompey forever ever! ✊🏾 To KC Speaks, my sister cousin, and Aunt Bibi: thank you for always checking on and encouraging me. To the rest of my family and dear friends, thank you for being my village. There were countless hours of writing and so many missed events to get the work done, but your support and understanding kept me grounded and motivated. This one is for all of us!
