My whole college career, every injury has left me asking the same question: Can I still be somebody?

For so long, “somebody” meant being fast. It meant times, places, and being known as a runner. Having my name out there. I thought running was what I was made for, and somehow, it became not just something I did, but who I was.

My senior year of HS/ Freshman year of college I began receiving DM’s on Instagram from younger athletes saying that they wanted to be like me, and looked up to me so much.
But the truth was I didn’t even want to be like me. I had been hiding the fact I had been dealing with an eating disorder for years and was medically sidelined due to it.
All people see are the victories, because that’s all people post about. Which makes anything less than that failure to the eyes of the world.

I sit here again, injured, asking myself the same question: Can I still be somebody?

But who is that somebody? Because I surely don’t wanna be a person that contributed to the toxic mentality that there is an ideal level of leanness for competitive athletes. Nor someone who hides all their struggles because they think it makes them weak. Because you can be a mess and still be a light.

Maybe my purpose was never only to be a runner. Maybe it was also to become someone younger athletes can look up to, not just for what I do on a track, but for who I am beyond it.
Someone willing to speak about the things people often hide: injuries, mental health, and the fear of losing yourself when your sport is taken away. Without feeling “cringy” for doing so.

You deserve to arrive at your goals healthy enough to enjoy them. Even if that means the path looks different than you imagined.

If what I’ve gone through helps even one person realize they are more than their sport, their place on a team, a time on a clock, or a number on a scale, then maybe that is what being somebody was always supposed to mean. And all the struggles were worth it.

When hope is deferred, I want to choose to see the season from a different perspective, to believe there can still be purpose in the midst of the trial.
