When scrums collapse, how does the ref know who to penalise?

2 main things the ref looks for.

1. Which side is pushing straight/has momentum going forward.

2. Which prop has their knees/torso on the floor.

MOMENTUM - If at any point one side starts moving forward (even the slightest movement) and the scrum collapses, the ref is likely to penalise the team on the back foot.

KNEES/TORSO on the floor - The ref will penalise the prop who has dropped to their knees under pressure under the presumption, they have “pulled down” scrum..

Things the ref would sometimes miss, otherwise known as the DARK ARTS could look like:

- “Standing off” when a prop allows the opposing prop to lean forward and forces the opposing prop to end up on their knees after (Set) impact.

- Change of bind (which i do - unintentionally 😅 in this vid) where the prop changes the initial position of their arm bind, to a more advantageous position.

- “Boaring in” where the prop comes in at an angle and takes away the opposing props force. (I do it slightly here as well)

So the next time you’re watching a scrum, try and see if you notice these subtle things 👀

If it’s one thing i’m learning in this season of my life. Amidst work, family, relationships and rugby, is that i am in so much more need of God than i realise.

You were never meant to do this life in your own strength. You were made to receive an unconditional love, that never leaves.

Only He can give that to you.

J.Cole said it best - Pride is the devil.

A biblical definition of Pride could be this, to place oneself over God. To put yourself in the driving seat of your own life, and live as though you don’t need Him.

John 5:30 - “By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.” - Jesus speaking.

God desires a reliance on Him, where we trust Him to direct our steps.

Everyone struggles with Pride to some extent or another, christian or not. No-one is exempt.

Psalm 51:17 - “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.”

Matthew 5:3 - “Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven” - Blessed are those who recognise their need of a saviour, their deep deep need of God.❤️

But the hope is that God judges our “thoughts and attitudes”, not just our actions. He knows when we desire to honour Him and get it wrong at times. He is kind, gives us space to ask for forgiveness and repent and draw close to Him again.

We can choose to suppress our emotions i.e compartmentalise, which is what we tend to do in order to accomplish what is necessary, but the consequences of that is an emotionally suppressed life. Meaning your highs don’t really feel like highs and your lows don’t really feel low. Deep love/happiness and joy can’t be experienced living like this.

This is not what God desires for His creation. Sometimes we can’t just pray away trauma/wounds/pain.

In the bible there was Saul. The first King of Israel. It says “God gave him a new heart” meaning God transformed His heart. Even with a transformed heart Saul still fell to Pride. He didn’t feel worthy enough, always sought the validation of others and put his desires above Gods.

All of this could have been avoided, had he learnt to take his pain/wounds to God. Like David who poured His heart out to God consistently. Thats what God desires from us. He doesn’t cause pain or just take it away, because He wants us to learn to trust Him with it. He wants to show us He is a good Father. How can we experience this if we don’t trust Him with the deepest parts of ourselves?

Being on this journey has allowed me to feel deeply again, the aim is to be a healthier son, brother, partner and friend. There is still more work He wants to do with me. It’ll take the rest of my life.

He’s waiting to have a conversation with you. Tell Him how you feel, where you feel let down and what you desire from Him. He will meet you and heal you.

Psalm 27:8 - My heart has heard you (God) say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming” ❤️

This a long one, but so worth the listen. Miracles do still happen, we just have to be aware what God is trying to say (through the Spirit) in these moments we are so quick to call “coincidence”.

Isaiah 65:24 - Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. 🔥🙏🏿

He wants you to know Him. He already knows and loves you deeply.
