“wrapped in strength: a thank you letter”

after finding a tumor & being diagnosed with a rare blood cancer earlier this year, i’m well on my way into remission and will eventually be able to say i’m free of cancer.

this is for the ones that have covered me along the journey.

first, thank you God for keeping me sane during turbulent times. i trust your will in my life and believe that i still have purpose here. when there seemed to be nothing to lean on, You were there. thank you for covering me with peace of mind, giving me the chance to love on others another day.

thank you to this body of mine for fighting the fight against cancer. not gone hold you, sometimes i feel like you’re working against me but i honor you in spite of it. i know i haven’t always treated you the best, but this has been a wake up call and i promise to treat you with the utmost care physically, mentally, and emotionally moving forward.

thank you to all my loved ones who’ve reached out to check in, sat in on doctor appointments with me, prayed for me, listened to my thoughts, answered my calls, supported me financially (because, apparently, having cancer is expensive), flew to nyc to spend time and laugh with me, got me out the house, or supported me in any other way. i’m not sure how far i would’ve made it without y’all and i’m grateful i didn’t have to find out.

i’m wrapped in strength with the love and support from you all and i just want all of you to know that you’re truly, deeply loved by me. 🫶🏾💕

and last but not least, thank you @killavsn for capturing me so beautifully and executing my vision for this photoshoot. the kindness you’ve given me is not taken for granted; you’re brilliant at what you do.

a masc-presenting queer 🥷🏽 underperforming masculinity: [unintentional] case study no. 1 📁✨

•location: brooklyn, ny

•components: a single day of selfies, photos and interpersonal interactions

•dimensions: variable silhouettes, structures, curves, and textures

•materials: telfar pieces — thanks, x 🫂

•process: retwist and style locs, capture both looks, transition from the afternoon skirt to evening jean shorts, and enjoy my time out as the chill, quiet 🥷🏽i am.

•findings: research indicates that the skirt with the telfar “church robe” underperformed exceedingly more than the jean shorts by receiving an instant chop from the girls and gays alike. unsurprising, but that’s a different conversation lol. alas, the jean shorts performed better and as expected due to its closer proximity to masculinity.

•conclusion: either the most liberated communities can be susceptible to perpetuating the same oppressive standards as certain counterparts or the shorts were simply a better outfit lol. either way, where is yo whimsy, 🥷🏽’s? just hang 🙂‍↕️

dear younger self,

i hope i’ve made you proud. i hope that every step, every decision i’ve made has honored you. sometimes i reminisce about those days in which we had no care in the world, no responsibility, no full understanding of reality. those were the times in which we were truly free.

thank you for always reminding me of what freedom feels like. thank you for that childhood innocence that drives me to give you the world because you’re deserving of that and more. thank you for not giving up when you felt unwanted and unlovable by the world because of your sexuality. thank you for the smile we still possess in spite of life’s challenges.

although we walk into this new year of life with the scary “c” word [cancer], we will leave it fully healed and in full remission. i know you’ll continue to give me the courage to fight for our future. i promise not to give up on you and our dreams, our aspirations, and the world we deserve. we’ve overcome every obstacle we’ve faced thus far and this will be no different.

i honor you today [and every day] because we have persevered, lived, laughed, loved, cried, prayed, succeeded, survived, elevated, healed, and made it through another year around the sun; let’s go for another one.

i wish you the happiest birthday.
