📍the melting cheese @themeltingcheese.syd

I’ve been wanting to try out this restaurant since coming to Sydney and I’m so glad I was able to go with my friends!! Because if you are after a restaurant that does ALL DAY BRUNCH dishes, then this place is definitely one for you to check out! As the name suggests this restaurant specialises dishes that incorporate cheeseeeeee 🧀!

What we ordered:
🍔 warm melting cheeseburger
🍝 spicy carbonara spaghetti + yuzu prawn pasta
🥩 spicy salted egg yolk beef tartare
🍓 strawberry mochi pancake
🍹mango bloom, Yakult tea cheese, mango cheesecake

Our personal favourite was the yuzu prawn pasta! Subtle yuzu flavour but the prawn was infused so well and super super soft and tasty! All these dishes weren’t too heavy on the palate even though there was cheese incorporated in all of them. In fact - for the burger, it actually paired very nicely (even though it looks like a lot of cheese😙)

A slight letdown was that the appetiser (beef tartare) came out last which wasn’t super ideal but either way it was still a very enjoyable dinner in a very cosy and cute environment!

📍bar Julius

this restaurant was crowned the 17th Best burger for 2026 by the Worlds 101 Best Burger Places but unfortunately it was kind of disappointing. I did go a while ago so can’t exactly remember too much but…..

the burger came at a price of $29 and honestly speaking the bun was Lowkey the best part- it was a cross between Japanese milk bun and Brioche bread, soft with a hint of sweetness.

However the burger patty itself was quite dry and a bit salty so we were glad we got a side salad to go with it. The remoulade was quite tangy and it did pair nicely with the remaining burger. But would I justify spending $29 on this? Probably not. The overall vibes of the restaurant were nice though!!

Unfortunately this restaurant has recently permanently closed (a bit of a late review oops) 🙊

📍o’donuts @odonuts_au

First time trying Japanese style donuts and my goodness was it good! The texture of these donuts were absolutely heavenly it was sooo soft that it literally melts in your mouth. If you are a fan of donuts but prefer airy and light ones this place is a must try ANDDD all of these were the perfect amount of sweetness 😙

What we ordered (on two separate occasions - clearly it’s vv good to go back twice hehe):
🍵Matcha - well balanced earthy matcha taste without being too bitter or sweet
🍫Chocolate - slightly bitter dark chocolate taste with deep cocoa notes (personal fav)
🍓Strawberry - cream was slightly on the sweeter side with a hint of tanginess
🫐Blueberry - reminded me of blueberry yoghurt!
🥜Pistachio - the pistachio flavour wasn’t too strong, but just enough to recognise its flavour

They also have savoury options like 🍣 which I hope to go back to try again at some point because savoury donuts sounds super intriguing 😋

📍Senkatsu @senkatsujp.au

Tucked away in the midst of Haymarket, this cosy restaurant provided a super cosy location for our weekend lunch. The atmosphere was super vibey, with dim lighting and wooden interior.

To share, we ordered:
🍣Naban Salmon $12 - marinated fried salmon in a tangy sweet teriyaki sauce with pickled vegetables
🍟Black Truffle Edamame Fries $14- arriving in a parfait glass, these fries were like mini spring rolls! Quite unique and delicious, although the truffle flavour wasn’t super extravagant
🍘Salmon Katsu $38- super tender Salmon with a crispy crumb coated exterior. Comes with a side of miso soup and cabbage salad and unlimited rice refills! However, the miso soup was a tad bit bland for our tasting.

Considering we both weren’t very hungry, portioning was decent. The restaurant opened at 12pm and was packed by 1pm so definitely go there early if you want to grab a seat.

📍Takimi Mazesoba @takimimazesobanz

If you like ramen, have you tried soupless Japanese noodles? If not this one is worth adding to your food list!

Tucked away near Eat Street in Takapuna, this cute hole in the wall restaurant has a range of mazesoba bowls! We went on a few separate occasions and got the Beef, chashu pork and raw salmon. Each bowl comes loaded with chewy noodles and plenty of toppings!

🥩 beef was flavourful, balanced, tender and not too thin! A good balance of the soft and chewy texture
🐷 the pork has a good balanced umami taste and wasn’t too rich!
🍣 the salmon was slightlyyy disappointing as the avocados were too hard and the salmon itself didn’t have much flavour

Overall rating: ⭐️8.5/10 for pork and beef, 6/10 for salmon (might be more refreshing in summer)

📍The Cook @thecookhamilton

Located in one of Hamilton’s oldest buildings, The Cook is serving up good vibes, good drinks and good food. The interior is spacious, with plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs, making it the perfect location for catch-ups with friends and colleagues, or for functions. We went on a Monday night and spontaneously joined their quiz night, and found out that they have live music on Thursday evenings.

🥔Social Mixer (Jalapeno Bites, Potato Wedges, calamari, spring rolls, Chicken tenders) Of this fried shared plate, the Jalapeno Bites were the standout. Lots of places you can’t really taste the jalapeno or feel the heat, but here they were so crispy and hot. The wedges were just what you want, and the calamari was not rubbery, although they could be a bit crisper. The chicken tenders were dry though 😞
🍕Margherita Pizza was so good! I think they’re worth going back for just to try the other pizza flavours because our pizza was very flavourful! If you like your pizzas with a crispy crust, that’s a bonus.
🍹They had a very impressive drink menus and options for taps we started with two Cook’s Soda’s: Coconut and Peach (coconut was far superior to peach which tastes exactly like it sounds). The GG passionfruit martini (not pictured) was quite nice if you’re after something sweet and tangy.

Overall, pleasantly surprised by the food and great atmosphere for a chill social night out

📍1947 eatery @1947.nz

A classy Indian restaurant in Auckland cbd! As someone who doesn’t usually venture into many diverse food groups - this place took me by surprise and is definitely one to check out!! This place was PACKED even on a Wednesday night so if you go make sure to book in advance!

🧅The lamb biryani was PACKED with flavour and the rice was super fragrant and tender. I honestly didn’t know that biryani could taste this good and the lamb was super super tender!! This was probably our favourite dish!
🐓The butter chicken had the right amount of spice kick (even for someone who can’t handle spice too well) with potent Indian spices and it was super creamy and comforting while having a good balance with sweet and tangy. When paired with the fluffy and soft garlic naan, the flavours work sooooo well!! 🫓
🍛The Kashi palak kofta was defs a first experience for me but it kind of tasted like a curry but just a bit more liquidy but was also a tad bit salty for my personal liking.

Pricing is on the mid to high end but for the quality of the food and the portions you would be surprised at how full you get!! AND make sure to pair with a 🍷 to top it all off :))

Some recent ish Japanese eats in Auckland!!

@tsurutsuru.teedst
Choose your own udon and broth with tempura sides!? One of its kind in Auckland for sure! Tucked away in Newmarket, this restaurant serves up warm, chewy and hearty noodle meals. The service is fast and staff are super friendly. Choose from their wide variety of broths and pair with their tempura sides!! The best part is that it is all SUPER CHEAP 💰< $15! If they had a bit more of a selection it would be even more amazing!!

Authentic Japanese katsu spot on the North shore! The meat is nice and juicy inside and fried well on the outside. The cold soba noodles and udon are a good texture and not overly rubbery and the cold soup is super refreshing are so well especially on a sunny day!! Portions are quite generous and the cabbage salad is very fresh and pairs super well with the meal 🤗

@paskatsu_nz
Japanese Katsu x pasta AND rice all in one?! The paskatsu portion serves 2 and is super filling with carbs overload. Slight kick in the spicy cream prawn pasta but with also a hint of sweetness which balanced the taste well. However the katsu was slightly too dry on the inside and out as well for my personal liking. The ades were a nice addition to the meal to help process the slight heaviness of all the carbs. The venue is also very chic and makes a very vibey dinner spot! 😙

Some recent Korean eats in akl!!!

@chulsnz
Located in commercial bay, this restaurant is makes the perfect lunch or dinner pit stop for workers. The meal had a fast service that didn’t skimp out on the fresh tasting ingredients especially for the bibimbap which is super important!! However rice was a little dry and hard for my personal liking but still pretty good nonetheless! 😌

This local restaurant is the definition of korean comfort food. Whether you are craving classic Korean jjajiangmyeon or anything home cooked this is the place for you. A super family friendly restaurant with homey vibes with the food tasting like a slice of home cooking. 😋

Korean x Vietnamese fusion food which is a super unique combination and the first of its kind in Auckland! The soft but bouncy texture of the noodles worked super well with the Korean infused flavours of the meat and broth. Definitely worth checking out and is absolutely worth the hype! 😄

Italian is classic, Japanese is homey so what’s better than a Japanese Italian fusion in ponsonby! From the intricate interior design of the restaurant to the plating of the dishes this restaurant has everything to offer.

What we ordered:
🦞 Lobster bisque - rich lobster/ prawn scent and flavour which coated the pasta nicely
🍟 Truffle Parmesan fries - super well seasoned and crispy
🥩 Koji aged t bone steak - meat texture was unfortunately slightly tough and lacked a bit of flavour overall
🍚 Truffle unagi don - the eel paired super well with its sauce and the rice making it extremely flavourful
🍜 Creamy seafood chilli udon - more sweet than “spicy” flavour but were generous with the seafood
🍝 Miso Carbonara - cheese and bacon was nicely balanced and not overly rich

🍵 Matcha Tiramisu - personally a bit too “wet” for my liking but the layers of strawberry added a nice touch to it. Also a bit on the sweeter side
🍰 Burnt pistachio cheesecake - couldn’t really taste the pistachio flavour and the cake itself might have been overly burnt because it did leave a bit of a bitter aftertaste.

Overall the portions were generous and flavours were delightful. The sauces of each dish were the highlight!! Really helped to elevate the flavour of all the dishes!! Although the desserts didn’t really meet our expectations 🥲

📍Waikato Udon @waikato_udon

Freshly made, hand-rolled authentic Japanese udon in Hamilton East, known to every local Hamiltonian is the best udon I have had in New Zealand and definitely lives up to the 4.9 star ⭐️ reviews because its got me going back twice now 😙

The noodles are truly the star of the show! If watching the noodles being rolled in front of you wasn’t enough to convince you that they’re handmade, the slightly uneven ends of the noodles should do. We mean this in the best possible way, the noodles are bouncy, firm and chewy, everything you expect from udon is present. The portions are generous, and if you are a light eater, they even offer a“less noodle” option.

The broth is incredibly rich, savoury, concentrated and full of umami along with a hint of sweetness which coats the noodles perfectly. You might not even need to add all of the broth, depending on your personal taste. They offer most of their udon dishes hot or cold, and both have their own charm. Cold definitely highlights the texture of the noodles, while the hot option soaks up a lot more of the flavour.

🐓The Toriten udon had a generous chicken tempura topping that bursts with juice with each bite (careful not to burn your tongue). The thin batter allows the broth to be absorbed well too.

🍄The Kitsune udon had thinly sliced fried tofu and mushrooms which were glazed in a light sweet sauce. Although there was no meat the texture and flavour of all the components worked so well with each other!

🥕The Kakiage udon comes with a giant ball of vegetable tempura that has the perfect airy texture and crunch that again just absorbs all the flavour from the broth. All the udon we got comes with grated daikon and spring onions, which don’t taste like much on their own but adds to the overall fragrance of the broth 🍜

Tip: If you’re going make sure to go early as they fill up super quickly (we had to wait a long time 🥲)
