Ooh. Seems no time at all since I was last posing for the lovely folk of Bare in Chingford. Yet here I am again, with some stunning drawings to show off by Catherine.

What unusual and distinctive work! Really dramatic stippling effect. A pleasure to model for it.

Wonderful weekend at West Dean College in Sussex, modelling for champion portrait artist Wendy Barratt’s course on portrait painting in oils.

Lovely group, super fellow model Jen – and the sun shone! (Well, most of the time anyway.) And such a superb gallery of work, guided throughout by Wendy’s experience, expertise and good humour.

So here are some of the group’s final portraits – and, bottom right, the self portrait that secured Wendy her place in the PAOTY competition and, ultimately, the accolade of Portrait Artist of the Year 2023.

‘Who’s looking at you…?’

For a life model, making eye contact with an artist while they’re working is usually a complete no-no. Yet here’s artist Sarah, at Stephen Jones’s Life Drawing Barn in Walton upon Thames, making the model’s gaze the focal point of her drawing.

Having asked me to drape myself round a chair in a semi-kneeling position for the long pose, Stephen then encouraged the artists to view chair and figure as one shape. So as well as Sarah’s striking work (1), here’s Andrew blending figure and chair into one tantalisingly ambiguous impression (2), and then Isabel (3) seeing the figure embracing the chair – maybe for emotional as well as physical support. Who knows?

Fascinating evening – as Stephen’s sessions invariably are. Thank you!

Bare Life Drawing’s firecracker boss Jana has a talent for attracting talent – and, goodness, don’t these stunningly original drawings just show it!

Done during a recent session at Bare in the Great North Wood, these quite remarkable interpretations are undoubtedly me – I remember each pose well – but what a quirkily transformed me!

They’re all by the extraordinary self-proclaimed ‘Modern Chimney Sweep’ Shirbon – who describes his work as ‘exploring figurative forms through movement, gesture, squiggly lines and lots of charcoal’.

Well there’s no argument with any of that! Totally unaware of what he was up to, while I writhed and squirmed on top of a low table, I was completely gobsmacked when I finally saw the results. Extraordinary work. What a gas!

Whenever you get two figures together you have a story. So here’s me and my good friend Anne with tutor Annabel Cullen at Putney School of Art & Design – and what on earth’s going on?

Are they happy? Have they quarrelled? Is he mansplaining? It’s for you to judge. So here to help you decide are drawings by…

1: Anita
2: Mary
3: Zem

Thought provoking ensembles, all three. Enjoy your speculations!

It’s always a joy to model at Stephen’s Life Drawing Barn, a step away from the River in Walton on Thames – such a sympatico environment, and some lovely work as a result.

This was earlier this summer, when Stephen was away on holiday and we were left to ourselves. I just loved the assured way in which Hazel dealt with this pretty complex pose. Lovely!

Although Michaelina Wautier painted her Triumph of Bacchus (recently on show at the Royal Academy) in the 1650s, it wasn’t until the mid twentieth century that critics finally acknowledged that a woman could have created such an ensemble of male nudes.

Eighteenth century Royal Academy founder members Mary Moser and Angelica Kauffman, and twentieth century painters Suzanne Valadon and Dame Laura Knight, all suffered from the patriarchy determining what female artists should be permitted to view and depict.

Now – almost 400 years since Wautier painted her Bacchus – the female gaze on the male nude is accepted as completely normal. Isn’t it?

Well. to judge from the 21st century painter Cecily Brown's experience, I'm not so sure. From what she reports, it sounds as if male nudes are invariably regarded as homoerotic, even when they're painted by a straight woman.

So as a male life model, posing more often than not for female artists, I want to do whatever I can to make amends for the centuries of tyranny imposed on females by the male gaze. To make a small contribution to the long overdue normalisation of the female gaze on the male nude.

Am I making any difference? No idea. But I’m grateful to Bruce Thomas of lifedrawing.art for giving me the opportunity to set out my stall last year in his Articles About Artists blog. You can find it at:

Hooray, hooray, I’m back again very soon with the lovely, lovely folk of Bare in Chingford. So here in the meantime are some super mementos of the last occasion I was there earlier this summer.

It might have been during one of the heatwaves. It was certainly hot and sunny. So, in an excess of exuberance, I raised my arms high for the first pose and launched into a rendition of Let the Sunshine In from the classic 1960s hippie musical Hair. It was only after everyone had started drawing that it dawned on me I was committed to the pose for 20 minutes.

But, goodness, it was worth it when I saw what wonderful work these talented folk produced. So here are drawings of this and other poses from…

1: Janice
2: Susanne
3: Evon
4: Elaine

Thank you, Jana, as ever, for continuing to invite me to pose for these lovely and talented people. A real pleasure – every time. See you all again soon!
