For Ava Hart, curiosity has a way of turning into action. She loves spending time outdoors, whether she’s hiking or exploring somewhere new. When she has the time, she’s reading, thrifting or experimenting with makeup. Give her the chance to stay up late looking through a telescope or spend the day outside picking up litter, and she’s probably in.

That curiosity has shaped Ava’s time at Delta and where she plans to go next.

Ava is pursuing an associate’s degree in science with plans to transfer to Central Michigan University to study environmental engineering. Her interest in science started early but narrowing that down wasn’t quite as simple.

“I loved chemistry, I loved biology, I loved physics,” Ava said. “I just could not pick one.”

Environmental engineering gave her a way to bring those interests together while working toward protecting the world around her.

At Delta, that interest quickly moved beyond the classroom.

Ava joined the Astronomy Club before her first semester even started. Then, after spotting an old Environmental Club poster on campus, she asked one of her professors about bringing the club back. A meeting followed and Ava became its president.

“The people you meet can completely change your perspective,” Ava said. “I’ve made so many connections and so many friends here. Between the clubs, my professors and the people I’ve met along the way, that’s really what made my entire experience at Delta.”

Eventually, Ava hopes to put her future degree to work protecting Michigan’s natural resources, particularly its freshwater. And despite knowing how overwhelming environmental problems can feel, she has learned not to underestimate what one person can do.

“What if one million people picked up one piece of trash a day?” She said. “I know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but if everyone did it, it would be a lot. Don’t feel overwhelmed with the alarming amount of bad in the world, because even the smallest amount of change is still change.”

It’s a mindset she has carried throughout her time at Delta; small choices can add up.

“I’m leaving Delta College with some lifelong friends, some lifelong experiences and no student debt.”

Delta College mechatronics student, James Perry Jr., spent time this summer at Michigan Tech University through the Michigan College and University Partnership Scholars Program, or MICUP. The program gives community college students the opportunity to spend seven weeks conducting research alongside Michigan Tech faculty and experts.

Along the way, he found pieces of his Delta education clicking into place. Programming, computer competencies, HVAC and even his work experience in IT all became useful parts of a much bigger project.

“You have to really savor the incremental progress of things, and that has done wonders for the way I look at homework, the way I look at personal projects, the way I look at a lot of things,” he said. “Now, no matter how small the victory is in whatever I’m doing, I really appreciate the fact that this is further than where I was when I started.”

Noah Maclag has been in theater since he was 5 years old. But up until now, he never pictured it as a career.
When he first began planning for college, Noah thought graphic design was his future. He studied it at the Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center before realizing an office setting just wasn’t for him. With the start of the semester right around the corner, he suddenly wasn’t sure what came next.

Then his mom suggested teaching.

Noah considered subjects he enjoyed, including history and science, before the answer finally clicked: theater.

“Once it was brought up that I could teach theater, which I don’t know why I never thought of it before, I just got instantly excited,” Noah said.

Now pursuing an associate in arts at Delta, Noah plans to transfer to Saginaw Valley State University to study theater and eventually become a high school theater teacher.

For Noah, that goal is about more than putting on a good show. His own experience acting and directing taught him what can happen when students are given space to try something new, take a risk and discover a different side of themselves.

"I want them to come in and be able to be themselves or be these characters that they never thought they'd be, find new things about themselves and just be free for the hour and a half that they're in my class," he said of his future students. "I want them to come in and leave with something they didn't have before."

Noah has already had opportunities to practice that kind of support at Delta. As a student ambassador, he helped connect students with campus activities and resources. The experience reinforced what he wants to offer to students someday. A place where different personalities, ideas and experiences are welcomed.

As he prepares for what comes next, he can sum up what he’ll take with him in two words.

“Confidence and independence.”
