Atlanta - a place steeped in history, the city nevertheless hums with constant self-reinvention. Layered Terminus is a love letter to the past, present, and future of this vibrant cityscape.

A meandering ceramic ripple depicts an abstracted Midtown Atlanta as an organic lifeform, with diverse community spreading across its undulating, forested hills. Nodes of activity, from cultural to academic to commercial, coexist in a collage of interests. Parametric patterns are layered across the rippling canvas of clay to represent the varied, polycentric character of the city. Cellular geometry spreads across Midtown proper, representing dense development. In contrast, a field of dot-like nodes fills the gaps, representing emerging “buds.” These signal local character and future sensitive intervention and preservation. The city’s organic qualities are contrasted by a rupture of the urban fabric by Interstate 75/85, reckoning with histories of division. At the center of the composition lies Georgia Tech, straddling the interstate and bridging boundaries toward a more coherent whole.

Ceramic additive manufacturing enables the merging of craft and customization in ways that traditional construction struggle to achieve. The sculpture’s design is driven by a human-centered approach integrating conceptual design intent with material and machine qualities. The form is developed through iterative prototyping, with each step informing aesthetic, spatial, and structural decisions. An image-based workflow moves between between parametric systems and layered visual studies, allowing ideas to be tested, translated, and refined. Variations in geometry, density, and articulation emerge through dialogue between the designers, material, and machine, resulting in an expressive language applicable to facades or standalone structures.

1-17: red brick art museum, designed by dong yugan. one of the most beautiful places i've had the privilege to visit. while exploring the labyrinthian garden, i felt a recurring urge to release a pack of kindergartners to run wild for hours. it's a deeply playful and exploratory space i'd recommend to anyone. by @demarest.design
