KATSU SAWADA (b. 1982, Honolulu, HI) is a Japanese-American new media artist who graduated from Parsons and works in San Francisco. He has had a major impact in the graffiti and hacker communities over the past 2 decades, blending technology with artistic practice.

In presenting Katsu Sawada’s work in Sacramento, the capital of California and a city shaped by its proximity to the institutions and structures of state power, DEMO offers a meaningful point of entry into Sawada’s practice, which is rooted in the rebellious spirit of graffiti and its resistance to systems of control. The exhibition considers psychedelia, artificial intelligence and apocalyptic phenomena as overlapping conditions, through which contemporary reality can be processed and understood.
