It’s clear some of you won’t take me seriously unless I dress like a man and wear ties. So I’ll wear “ties” more often. 😘 by @democracywithjonathan

Always such a treat to return to my alma mater, to teach. I always learn so much from the students and leave energized for the work ahead. Thanks to my colleague and friend Tim McCarthy for inviting me to join the Queer Nation: Politics, Protest and Policy of LGBTQI+ People in the US course. by @democracywithjonathan

It is one of the best parts of the academic year, the Black Policy Conference

I am dedicating this degree to every person who has ever been counted out. To every person who has been deemed unworthy of living and thriving because of where they were born, their socioeconomic status, their gender, sexuality, and/or identity, their race, their religious beliefs (or lack thereof), their disability, and their political beliefs.

May we learn to dream bigger dreams than what we were told was possible.

May we continue to rise like a phoenix as we weather the storms of life.

May we choose freedom, grace, righteous anger, and transformation.

May we channel our hurt, experiences and gifts into making this world a better place for everyone.

And may we shatter every systemic barrier built to keep us and our loved ones down.

Amen.
Ashe.

2023 has been a blockbuster year for me. Zora Neale Hurston said there are years that ask questions, and there are years that answer questions. 2023 has been a year full of answers.

The biggest reason why 2023 has been so special is that I have experienced unprecedented levels of internal peace from beginning to end. I hear my elders whispering “peace that passes all understanding.”

I no longer expect life without conflict, pain, loss, and trauma. But I pray and work for the internal peace to withstand the storms, to hold and move through grief and loss, and to bear witness to injustices and work towards a more just world.

And more importantly, the peace and stillness to fully experience the joyous moments, to remain deep in connection with my people, and to remain focused on my purpose. ❤️ by @democracywithjonathan
