Fairytalers, Ellis Austin Finnie’s feminist reimagining of the fairytale, returns for a second season at Melbourne Fringe 2026. The ghosts of four 17th century French women writers, credited with inventing fairytales yet overshadowed by the Brothers Grimm, observe our world from the afterlife. Directed by Gabrielle Ward, the show balances wry humour with real historical injustice and sapphic love, interrogating what a happily-ever-after ever meant for women.

Bridie Noonan's directorial debut, arrives at Melbourne Fringe as a lonely, absurd one-person play about the wreckage left after rupture. Its protagonist, Phoebe, can turn "things into other things", and having turned her lover into a silver bird, she isolates herself trying to reverse it.

Edie Hopgood was lucky enough to be part of Playground's Melbourne debut. During which, she found herself slowly surrendering to the process and, for once, drawing for drawings sake. No outcome, no rules, just pure, childlike release. Following the event, Edie and Alyssa met to discuss The Playground’s trajectory and projects to date, along with Alyssa’s bright plans for the future.

Florist Isabella Persano takes her cues from the mess of an overgrown, thriving garden. Her new store, World of Petals, recently opened on High Street in Westgarth, and it's already more than a flower shop. She speaks about rebelling against the design rules, working with the seasons rather than against them, and getting people to tune into the nature filled corners of the city.

Widowspeak excel at finding profundity in the understated. Across more than a decade of music, Molly Hamilton and Rob Earl Thomas have built a catalogue of songs that habitually drift in like a familiar memory. Their latest album, Roses, continues that tradition, but with an intimacy that feels particularly vivid.

Julz transformed her Naarm share-house garage into p0litrix, a radical lending library stocking over 200 queer, intersectional and anti-capitalist texts. Co-designed with a close friend who passed in 2025, it operates on the belief that access to political language is itself resistance, offering a free, barrier-free alternative to institutional learning.

RISING, the city-wide festival of new art, performance and music, runs across twelve nights, featuring over 300 artists and 65 events stretching throughout the city. Among this year's most anticipated names is Cate Le Bon. The Welsh musician, songwriter and producer who has spent nearly two decades making work that feels entirely at home in a program like this, familiar and strange in equal measure, impossible to file neatly away.

Munira is an Australian poet and writer whose work has previously been published in Adroit Journal, Red Room Poetry, Liminal, and Meanjin. As the recipient of the 2024 WestWords Accelerator, Munira was provided the opportunity to focus on the story that had been ruminating in the corners of her mind since 2021. Initially, she had a character group of four women, a clear arc for the storyline, and a central motive for the book; what became of it is an exploration of the complex ties between family, place, and identity.

Kunta is a Black trans woman writer and maker who grew up in Xiaotangshan, Beijing, and later moved to Naarm/Melbourne. Her work blurs confession and performance, weaving scars, masks, and armour into stories of survival and desire.

Emerging from the long-running creative connection between Evie Vlah and Gigi Argiro, punk band Public Figures are carving out a place for themselves with an unapologetic sense of intensity. Fresh from stages shared with some of the loudest acts in Australian rock, the band, completed live by Lakota Vella on lead guitar and Mary-Lou Hylands on bass, thrives on instinct, catharsis and complete creative freedom.
