This is my first attempt at creating a maquette for my Lost Woodlands project.

Actually it’s already a bit more than a maquette; it’s a hand made photobook printed on super thin Japanese Washi inkjet paper. The effect is one of creating a memory. After the page is turned the image remains. It is seen, yet unseen, faded yet remembered.

The photobook is part fine art folio, part memorial and part documentary, featuring a small selection of photos from my project photographing HS2 construction sites, from the protest camps in 2020-2022, to what remained a year on in 2023. It is a record of human impact on the environment and what has been lost, and continues to be lost to relentless construction and development.

The cover image is the front page of the final set of eviction papers (before the whole route was injuncted, preventing any further protests or scrutiny).

If this is of interest to anyone please DM me as at the moment I can’t afford to make any more for sale! I’m also working on putting together a more accessible and affordable version, with additional materials including original posters and flyers, testimonials and stories from former protesters.

I realised that I actually don’t share much of my own art on here.. and this is supposed to be my art page! Time to start sharing finished pieces!

“Protection” is a traditional patchwork quilt design made from recycled materials, original photographs on fabric and embroidery. Made as part of my Lost Woodlands project, the quilt, a traditional item of warmth and domestic comfort, safety and protection becomes something less comfortable. The piece depicts letters of both hope and creeping despondency written by protesters, trees marked for destruction, the remains of unsuccessful camps, and long lost protest placards.

In reality the camps were transient uncomfortable places, especially in the winter, and constantly at risk of violence eviction, but they brought people together, from the well to do middle classes to the homeless community, who were given something to fight for.

Lost Woodlands is a documentary project that records three years of HS2 protests and aftermath. I spent 2020 to 2022 visiting camps between London Euston and Staffordshire, here I witnessed the ‘homes’ built by protesters, in the trees, on and under the ground. Homes to live in but also to provide protection for the nature and ecosystems under threat. A year later I returned to witness the destruction.

I took hundreds of photos, which I have used in various ways, and created three textile pieces that open the dialogue.

Bit of a hectic weekend, but I did get the opportunity to pay a visit to the @peckhamexperiment as part of @openhouselondon and browse the archival photographs and model of the building which was absolutely fascinating.

The Peckham Experiment (or The Pioneer Health Centre) was a groundbreaking 20th-century study in South London that focused on cultivating holistic human health rather than just treating disease. It ran from 1926 to 1950 (with a pause during World War II) and was founded by physician-biologists, Dr. George Scott Williamson and Dr. Innes Hope Pearse.

Local families, “within pram pushing distance “ paid a small membership fee that enabled them to access a host of activities designed to improve their leisure, health and wellbeing and prevent them from becoming sick. Whilst there I met a 92 year old man who had been part of the Peckham Experiment, attending regularly as a teenager.. he certainly stayed healthy!

The Peckham Experiment CIC is planning an exhibition and is keen for locals and groups to get in touch

So glad to have had the opportunity to catch the opening of this lovely exhibition last night by @brewing_artists

Its only on today and I highly recommend a visit if you can. It’s in Wandsworth and it features a friend from Wales @oshuu_art with his other worldly sculptures plus some other great artists. I particularly loved the paintings of @evecoxart and the textile installations of @justkhizra whose designs focus on patterns and motifs taken from her home.

Absolutely gorgeous to catch up with this lot too!! All grew up with my daughter and spent time in and out of my home in Wales. Haven’t seen them since I left! @sineadkaya_777 @danny_lebosch ❤️❤️ taken in London, United Kingdom by @deniselaurabakerart

It’s only two more weeks until our group exhibition @be_longing.s opens at @h.artslane in New Cross, London. The exhibition includes the work of eight artists exploring the themes of home, belonging and displacement.

The exhibition runs between 12th and 20th September and coincides with the London Design Festival with whom we are partnering and will include a panel discussion, artist talks and two workshops.

We are super grateful that you have helped us reach a third of our target!!!! A big thank you for that as it has covered our basic exhibition costs but we still need to raise a bit more to make this a real free community event that doesn’t leave disadvantaged artists out of pocket.

The exhibition does have a serious side in that we are raising awareness of the less visible side of homelessness and the emotional impact of displacement, so we ask you to keep giving if you can, and share widely. But if you can’t please come and visit.

Sneak peak!!!.. details and process while preparing for the upcoming @be_longing.s exhibition at @h.artslane gallery in New Cross next month.

Only a couple of weeks to go to the private view and I’m getting excited!

This is the biggest installation I’ve worked on (so far). It’s been an amazing opportunity to experiment, make new work and try out new things… come and see it the in all its glory!
