On my trip home, my Daddy, his wife Liz and I broke bread in my Momma Brenda Ballew’s formal dining room with my Mom’s casual china & candelabra’s. Losing Momma’s physical presence is one thing. But how do we keep living and honoring her in the present? I cooked a nice meal, got some wine and dessert and we celebrated life! I talked about my Mom until I got sleepy. Ya’ll, this solo has lived in my soul for yeaaaaaars!!! When I was a junior member of the American Spiritual Ensemble at age 19, the voice I heard singing this solo, was @msangelabrown Secretly, I’ve always wanted to sing it🤭🙌🏾 Well, I finally got a chance! The text says, “I’ve been way down in the valley for to pray. And I ain’t done praying yet!” Where my prayer warriors at?!

Dinner fit for a Queen!✨👸🏾🥂 The Birthday Queen! WHAT A TIME!!🙌🏾✨🎶Thank you to @bangorsymphonyorchestra and Maestro Lucas Richmann for inviting me to share in the 130th season celebration, ‘Masterworks V: ‘Our American Story!’ It was such an honor to present the concert arr. of Porgy and Bess alongside my friend and colleague, @the_keenan_show A huge shout-out to The University of Maine Singers and The Maine Oratorio Society! We brought the house DOWN!🎶🙌🏾

I also want to thank Renia Shterenberg, Debbie Richman, Francis, Max and Scott for making our time in Maine so enjoyable! I felt right at home! As my Daddy always says, “Can’t stop, won’t stop!” Honored, excited, and absolutely bursting with gratitude! I’ll be performing the Russell Bennett arrangement of Porgy and Bess with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, The University of Maine Singers and the Oratorio Society on Sunday, April 26th at 3pm.

This music has been part of my journey for years—dating back to when I was a sophomore in high school, when my choir teacher Mary Lois Kearns, took us to see Porgy and Bess in Charleston, SC. A memory that clearly planted a seed!

Never could I have imagined that years later I’d perform this work in the Broadway tour, the Metropolitan Opera production, and now bring it to life in Bangor, Maine.

A close friend once told me about someone who signs everything with a meaningful phrase— and also my Momma did as well:
