This weekend in Finland we celebrate springtime’s biggest party Vappu or Valborg 🎉🇫🇮

Celebrations start on May Day Eve on the 30th of April and continue to through the 1st of May. Originally the first May Day festivities started in upper-class families in the 1700’s. At that time people celebrated the day by going horse riding, enjoying the greenery of spring, and held parties drinking sima, at home together with friends and family. Later Vappu became the celebration of the workers – Labour day💪

Nowadays the political climate is very different and the most visible group of celebrants are the students. Vappu symbolises the end of the upper-education school year and graduation - but most importantly it’s a massive party🍩🎊🧑🏼‍🎓 sugar coated donuts it’s a particular treat!

Yesterday Ambassador Jakob Nymann-Lindegren received the official return of the Danish Royal Order of the Elephant, which belonged to the late president of Finland, Mauno Koivisto🎖

President Koivisto, who served as the ninth president of Finland from 1982-1994, was given the Order by H.M. the Queen of Denmark on 2 May 1983🇩🇰🇫🇮

The Order of the Elephant is Denmark's oldest and most distinguished royal order of chivalry. In its original form, it can be traced back to around 1460, when King Christian I 🤴, with the Pope’s approval, established “The Fellowship of the Mother of God". The society’s badge was a medallion of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus worn on a chain of tower-bearing elephants🐘 🏰 🤱🏽

The choice of the elephant as the actual badge signalled a certain form of continuity between the older pre-Reformation Catholic order and the revived Order of the Elephant from 1580. Through this artifice, it was possible to put the old Catholic order at a distance and signal a discreet link, which ensured the Order of the Elephant a venerable age. However, there is no valid explanation as to why the elephant gained foothold as a symbol in a Danish order.

From 1580 until now, 890 persons have received the Order of the Elephant. During H.M. the Queen’s reign, the Order of the Elephant has been bestowed upon 68 people. Recipients have been royals and foreign heads of state 🗺 👸🏻🤴🏻

Only once has the Order of the Elephant been bestowed upon a bourgeois-born Dane, namely the late shipowner, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, as appreciation of his great importance to Danish business and Danish society🚢🎖 by @denmarkinfinland

Today marks 100 years ownership of the Danish residence in Helsinki on the corner of Yrjönkatu and Bulevardi!🇩🇰🇫🇮

Denmark was one of the first countries that recognised the independence of Finland, already on 10 January 1918. Four years later the Danish state bought the apartment located in a building designed by renowned Finnish architect Sigurd Frosterus, as an official residence for the second Danish Envoy, Flemming Lerche💪🏼🌱

The residence has been continuously in diplomatic use for longer than any other building in Helsinki, and has therefore become a piece of Finnish diplomatic history. Today, the residence is used for any kinds of events to promote Danish and Finnish cooperation🤝📜 In the pictures you can get a glimpse of how the residence has changed over the years☝️

In the upcoming months we will post a series of facts of the residence in honour of the 100 years anniversary!

Last week Ambassador Jakob Nymann-Lindegren and Head of Trade Jesper Stig Andersen met in Tallinn with the other Danish Ambassadors and Heads of Trade from the Nordic and Baltic countries to discuss strategy and priorities for The Trade Council in the Nordic-Baltic region for 2022🇩🇰🇫🇮🇳🇴🇸🇪🇮🇸🇪🇪🇱🇻🇱🇹

The meeting was particularly important, since the Nordic and the Baltic countries together hold a huge potential for Danish companies wanting to expand to new markets due their many similarities. It therefore makes perfect sense that the Nordic and Baltic countries are among the largest export markets for Danish companies and incredibly important for Danish growth and employment💪🏼📈

Beside the meeting there was also a bit time for sightseeing and a visit to the place where the Danish national flag “Dannebrog” allegedly fell down from the sky in 1219🇩🇰

Today we celebrate H.C. Andersen's 217 birthday!🎉🇩🇰📜🎩
H.C. Andersen has had an impressive impact on Danish culture as well as the world literature with his enchanting fairy tales. His most famous fairy tales in Finland are probably "The Little Mermaid", "The Princess and The Pea", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling", and "The Nightingale"🇫🇮🧜🏼‍♀️👑🟢🌬❄️🦢⛩

H.C. Andersen is from originally from Odense, who is proud to have raised the young Andersen in his tender years, which is illustrated by one of the many sculptures and portraits of him in the city🇩🇰

Today Ambassador Jakob Nymann-Lindegren decorated Johan Granholm with the Order of the Dannebrog for his great efforts as Danish Honorary Consul in Oulu and Rovaniemi🎖

Johan has been consul for Denmark since October 2013. Congratulations, Johan🎊🇩🇰

Fun fact about the Order of the Dannebrog:
It was established by Christian V in 1671. However, to give the new order more weight and prestige it was maintained that the Order was in fact a re-establishment of a much older order, which should have been founded by Valdemar Sejr in connection with the crusade at Lyndanisse on 15 June 1219 - where Dannebrog according to legend fell from the sky and secured the victory for the Danes🇩🇰 This is why the sign of the Order has the shape of a cross, and Dannebrog's red and white colors characterize the ribbon and cross of the Order.

Since 1808 the Order has been divided into several classes. A significant change came in 1951, when Frederik IX decided that women should also be able to be decorated in the Order of the Dannebrog. Danish citizens of bourgeois origin today constitute by far the largest group of decorated. by @denmarkinfinland

This week we have had the pleasure of hosting @aarhsdk during their study trip to Finland 🇫🇮 The purpose of the trip has been to visit Helsinki and Espoo for inspiration and knowledge-sharing and it’s been a busy schedule! Over the past two days the covered topics included how the cities and local organisations work with #sustainability, #infrastructure, #entrepreneurship & #innovation, and city cooperation with local universities and companies in the region🌱💡

On Monday the delegation visited Slush, Maria 01 and the Helsinki Mobility Lab. @slushhq presented the organisations activities and future plans (including the SLUSH’d event hosted in Aarhus October 2022!) as well as how the city of Helsinki fosters the best possible conditions for SLUSH. At @mariazeroone the startup ecosystem presented its impressive work for entrepreneurship, whilst the Mobility Lab delved deeper into how the Helsinki is used as a testbed for many innovations - in particular within #urbanmobility♻️🚝

On Tuesday the delegation met with the City of Espoo @espooesbo, @vttfinland and Smart Otaniemi for experience sharing and how the combination of the three are aiming to make Espoo an innovative platform. The study-trip ended with a visit to the City of @helsinki for an introduction to the city’s work on sustainable tourism, citizen involvement, and city-university collaboration 🤝

A big thank you to all of our hosts for having us! 🙏😊
