Thank you @basmaedreesviolin for this gorgeous reflection of Arab Spring and (for allowing me to share it. )❤️✨ These are the DM’s that make a playwright’s heart sing.

It’s closing weekend and I’m having all the feels. What an exceptional run to a brilliant cast, creative team, and co producers that were a dream.

TONIGHT IS OPENING NIGHT!!! ❤️

Some thoughts as we move into the run...

Over the past four previews we made cuts 🔥, rewrote the end 🤯, changed top of show, sharpened the comedy, and uncovered a moment of stunning simplicity.

Which is to say: the audience showed us what the play was ready to become.

There’s a saying that the audience is the final player. Especially with new plays, but in particular with a world premiere, an audience can reveal where something is muddy, how to clarify the rhythm, what needs more build, where a quiet moment can breathe, and ultimately, the heart of the thing.

I’ve spent most of my life in the theatre and I am still wowed by what happens when a group of people gather together to make something from nothing. Every audience is unique. Every performance is unique. Every show becomes a temporary community that will never exist in quite the same way again.

Even within the confines of a script, blocking, sound, and light cues, every performance is a dialogue between the story, the actors, and the audience.

It’s one of our last living spaces — shared time and shared space.

After all, shared time and space is how we fall in love, grieve, transform, laugh, forgive, and play. In a digital age, theatre feels increasingly radical to me. For a few hours, we gather together, put away our devices, and experience something as a collective.

What could be more valuable than that?

Tonight, we officially open.

To everyone who joined us during previews: thank you for trusting us while the play was still becoming itself.

And to everyone still to come: welcome to the family. ❤️

ONE WEEK TILL OPENING!!! ❤️

Some things I’m thinking about at this particular threshold between rehearsal, tech, and performance:

1. It will never cease to amaze me how a world of invention can come to life and become better when you bring artists into a room to play.

2. Theatre may be one of the greatest forms of resistance we have against AI, fascism, isolation, and grief. Making things from scratch with other humans is hard, inspiring, and always, always worth it.

3. A director who works to know your play from the inside out is worth their weight in gold. @still_nai_rise

4. Producers matter. Having not one but two companies backing this project has made me realize how much producers are always juggling behind the scenes. And when they do their job well, they make it look effortless. @sfbatco and @goldenthreadplays are a dream team.

5. For as long as I’ve worked in theatre, first as an actor and now as a playwright, I am still amazed at how nervous I get before an opening. But alongside the nerves there is also pride. Opening night is next Monday. Soon there will be no more notes, no more rehearsals. The play will enter its next and final stage. Until then, I’m going to savor every moment of creative play with this extraordinary team of artists.

Did you get your tickets yet? It’ll be here and gone before you know it.

Photos of our amazing actors from the designer run of ARAB SPRING — where the designers join our cast and director to prepare for tech. There were many laughs, a few tears, and a infectious collaborative spirit in the room!
