Not pictured: the TechBirmingham team, the board, the community, our national partners, the first time founder who’s working to leave the world better than they found it, the student who got inspired to pursue a career in STEM after attending Sloss Tech, or the educator who inspired them to attend in the first place — and let’s not forget our partners in local and state governments. You get the idea. I’m always grateful for these moments of recognition. And I’m always eager to use them as opportunities to highlight the people who are not pictured — those who truly deserve our support and encouragement. Someone recently asked me about my childhood, and reflecting on it, I realized I wouldn’t change a thing — though I would’ve loved more time with my Grandma Stella on this side. She left too soon, but my mom has carried her legacy of love and excellence forward, and I’ve benefitted from it many times over. If you know me, you know I’ve also been blessed with bonus moms in Auntie Val and Auntie Arlene. They each carry and reflect my grandmother’s legacy. To say I’m blessed is an understatement. To my mom, Naomi Gordon — of all the titles and accolades I’ve received, the one I cherish most is being your son. Thank you. Happy Mother’s Day. I love you. #happymothersday 🖤 by @deongordon

On March 7, 1965, John Lewis — a product of two HBCUs — led 600+ freedom fighters across a bridge in Selma, where they were met with state violence and brutality. Sixty-one years later, to the day, over 600 people gathered in his home state at the UNCF Mayor’s Masked Ball to celebrate HBCU impact and honor those who paved the way — including Rev. Jesse Jackson and Lewis’s roommate and Selma voting rights architect, Bernard Lafayette, two giants we recently lost. I was touched to be offered the opportunity to open the mission moment fundraising segment. I often joke that my mom gets a degree whenever she gets bored. But there’s a lot of truth in that light-hearted remark. I’ve never seen someone so relentless, so determined, that “no” was never an option. And being told otherwise was practically an insult.Every mountain motivated her. Not out of vague stubbornness, but from a deep belief that a divine promise waited on the other side. Unshakeable faith. It’s one thing to hear about it. It’s another to witness it.To that special woman from Niagara Falls, New York who inspired me through her life — and continues to do so with every passing day — happy birthday, Mom. by @deongordon

All smiles. Sloss Tech was coming to a close. Snuck off for a quick, quiet lunch with friends. Had a brief moment to take it all in under the marquee. Still reflecting days later. Still resting too. I’m behind on messages. But know that I’m grateful. Y’all showed up and showed out. People from near and far executed a masterclass in creating a tech event that, first and foremost, centers the community and builds upon a powerful legacy of access and inclusion.
