More than a collection of autographs, DePaul Law’s Supreme Court Signatures Collection offers a material record of judicial authority across American history.

Housed in the Rinn Law Library, the broader physical collection includes a nearly complete collection of Supreme Court justices’ signatures, extending from Chief Justice John Jay (1789–1795) to Justice Elena Kagan (2010–present). Its letters, legal instruments, signed photographs, articles, speaking notes and other materials reveal how justices communicated and how the authority of the Supreme Court appeared in public and professional life beyond judicial opinions.

A substantial portion of the collection, including 184 items associated with 103 justices, is now available through HeinOnline. These materials give researchers, students and future generations new ways to study how judicial authority has been written, circulated, preserved and contested across American history.

What do users get wrong about prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, and why should law students care?

On these platforms, it's not just you and your friends making a bet. There are sophisticated financial institutions on the other end, says DePaul Law Professor Karl Lockhart. The markets sit in an interesting regulatory space between gambling and investing, and there's a lot litigation about where prediction markets fit in.

Last week, we covered the advocacy organizations across Chicago’s Loop that work to change the system. This final week, we’re covering the courts, where cases move forward.

When legal disputes can’t be resolved elsewhere, this is where they’re decided.

In the Loop, the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse handles federal trials, appeals and bankruptcy cases. The Richard J. Daley Center is home to Cook County’s civil courts. The Illinois Appellate Court (First District), also in the Loop, reviews decisions from Cook County.

Last week, we covered public interest organizations that help people navigate urgent legal needs. This week, we’re looking at organizations that focus on public interest advocacy, using law to address broader barriers and protect rights.

Advocacy: Changing the System

Not all legal work happens case by case, some of it is about changing how the system works.

In the Loop, organizations like the ACLU of Illinois, Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Equip for Equality use litigation, policy advocacy and other legal strategies to challenge systemic barriers and protect individual rights.

Public Interest: Expanding Access to Justice

Last week, we looked at the government offices that shape public law and civic life throughout Chicago’s Loop. This week, we’re turning to the organizations that put access to justice into action.

Too many people face serious legal problems without meaningful access to help.

In the Loop, organizations like Legal Aid Chicago, Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, Ascend Justice and the National Immigrant Justice Center provide free or low-cost legal help when housing, family stability, immigration status and other serious needs are on the line.

It’s law at its most direct, helping people navigate real problems when they have nowhere else to turn, all within blocks of DePaul Law. by @depaullaw

Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS) honored DePaul Law with its 2026 Partner Award, recognizing our longstanding commitment to pro bono service and expanding access to justice.

The award highlights the leadership of Elizabeth Boe, Katie Liss and Shaye Loughlin, whose work across public interest programming, career services and experiential learning helps students build practical legal skills while serving communities in need.

We’re also grateful for our partnership with CVLS Deputy Director Phil Mohr (JD ’08), whose collaboration helps connect our students with meaningful pro bono opportunities in Chicago.

The celebration also recognized several DePaul Law alumni whose work advances access to justice in Chicago: Brandon McRoyal (JD ’06), Hon. Kristi Nelson (JD ’95), Alicia Petersen (JD ’20), Lakeyah Scales (MJ ’18, JD ’22) and Kent Sinson (JD ’87).

Government: How Lawyers Serve the Public

Last week, we looked at how lawyers build careers in-house at corporations. This week, we turn to government, where lawyers serve the public in many different ways across the legal system.

In the Loop, the Cook County State’s Attorney prosecutes criminal cases, while the Public Defender represents those who cannot afford a lawyer. The Illinois Attorney General handles statewide litigation and enforcement, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecutes federal cases. Lawyers at the City of Chicago’s Law Department handle municipal litigation and policy, while attorneys across federal agencies focus on regulation, compliance and enforcement.
