Festac Town is characterized by its rich cultural heritage and strong sense of communal unity. It is a small, lively, and neighborly community where residents operate as a cohesive family. Growing up in Festac, transitioning to another town made me confront how different life feels without that communal way of living. It was the simple things I missed. The trees, the parks and playgrounds and Saturdays when the entire neighborhood came out for environmental clean-ups and caught up with one another and the end-of-year parties that made every close feel alive. Even now, I still carry the desire for togetherness and community wherever I find myself. I spoke with a few residents, asking how Festac has changed since Festac ’77 and whether they feel the town has been forgotten. Mr. Debo shared: “Yes, when it comes to infrastructure, Festac has suffered neglect since Festac ’77. However, the community is currently experiencing a revival under the new local government chairman, Prince Lanre Sanusi (PLS). A former resident himself, he has initiated several road rehabilitation projects, which have given residents renewed hope. Despite general skepticism toward political promises, the visible progress on specific local streets has earned him significant support. As promises are made, we pray for their fulfillment.” Ultimately, Festac remains a peaceful and welcoming environment, defined by its cooperative spirit and a shared commitment to restoring the estate’s former glory and functional excellence. by @deraenwelum

“Showing up in Lagos” This series is a reflection of persistence in a city that both tests and shapes you. It is an ode to the everyday warriors, the ones who rise before dawn, push through fatigue and hold themselves together in the noise and rush of Lagos. It is about the unshaken strength it takes to keep going not because it is easy, but because it is necessary. Lagos is a marathon with no finish line. Each day you begin again. Each day you carry the weight. Each day you cross the line. Only to wake up and run it once more. by @deraenwelum
