Afterthoughts.
This was such a great experience all around, I’m smiling as I put together this collection of pictures. These are frames from my and my friends phones but we had a photo/videographer during my talk, so I should have better quality content to share soon! Exciting!

Thank you to everyone that came bring me company, your presence was noticed. It’s very lovely to recognized that most people were familiar faces, it solidifies our connection and it makes me feel like we are joining in community.

When I’m painting, the composition builds layer by layer, one cannot be created without the previous one. There’s no skipping, no short cut, the only way is through. Like painting, life evolves layer by layer- it feels like this layer completed, it’s done something to shape the composition but there’s many layers to add in order to view and recognize its final shape. So let this be the first of many, I still have lots to paint and lots to say.

Special thank you to Jasmine, my curator, for trusting me. I felt so creatively free! And comfortable and encouraged when doubtful. Pleasure working with you and The Supermarket team <3

“Offspring of Her’s”: A Recap 📸🎨🖼️

Join The Bakery Atlanta for the opening reception of “Offspring of Her’s”, a solo show 🎨 by Debanhi Romero @derarosa_, on Sunday, August 23rd, 🗓️from 6pm to 9pm at @thesupermarket.atl 📍

Romero’s show primarily includes a collection of paintings and ceramic work. 🖌️ Her work explores motherhood, femininity, and their connection to nature. Romero carries her Mexican 🇲🇽 heritage with her, embedded and transformed within her motifs. It reminds us of the existence a cultural lineage can grant, and it questions how identity and experience intertwine.

Debanhi Romero received a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Georgia State University in May 2026. 🎓 Romero was born in Atlanta, GA. She and her older brother are children of Mexican immigrant parents, making them first-generation U.S. citizens. About the show from Romero:

“My work rounds the idea of motherhood, femininity, and their similarity of equal worth with nature itself - Mother Nature. I am taking my own relationship with my mother as well as other significant women in my life as a mere sample; I am not special, I am just like you. I am not painting the women in my life to claim importance over your perception, as history would imply; I paint them because it's simply what I know and what I've lived. I claim that you are just like me. My argument is that womanhood is a pattern, and that in the same way it presents for humans, it presents for nature itself. How do you translate a feeling into an image – especially when it comes from a complex, deep, personal place?

These are questions Debahni Romero (@derarosa_ ) grapples with in her practice. From the starting point of a reference image, her work becomes more abstracted as she works towards a final painting – meaning and expression coalescing with color and organic lines.

Central to Debahni’s work is her philosophy as a woman artist, as her work touches on dramatic and strong visual embellishments that are inherent parts of her personal experience of womanhood. Furthermore, she firmly believes, “a man cannot make what [she] makes.”

In these explorations of womanhood, Debahni often features her mother, or other female members of her family as subject matter, addressed in her latest work, ‘Mother Nature’. Here, she explores the roots of this colloquial term, specifically, “the idea of femininity and nature being very equal.”

Throughout this piece, Debahni mixes in observations of her mother and other female members of her family; seeing how they live life, their struggles, hopes and dreams.

Though she would describe herself as an emerging artist, having just completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts thesis show, Debahni is determined to expand her practice and build her audience.

However, she still wrestles with the idea of ownership of her paintings, which she sees as a tribute to her family: how could you find a final destination, or a home, for ideas and subjects so personal?

She doesn’t have all the answers yet, but if anything, to make art is to explore and find your own way.
