During the 40s and 50s, only specific Jamaican communities had access to radio and therefore music.  For the Jamaican working class, music was a luxury. But then came the invention of sound systems, and with it the rise of Dancehall.  What started off as entertainment then turned into something that influenced, shaped and transformed an entire generation.  For that reason, we’ve joined forces with @derekabard for the launch of his book, ‘Fire Inna Dancehall’ on Sat 7th November. Alongside Montell Gordon, the two will reason on what dancehall and soundsystem culture can teach us in shaping resilient communities. Creating spaces on our own terms. And forging new paths.  Tickets are now live, but are limited.  Once they’re gone. They’re gone.  Don’t lack. by @derekabard

My entry into journalism began in reggae, one of my first loves, 15 years ago. So, it was a real pleasure to sit down with the great Derek A. Bardowell, a former reggae journalist and prolific writer who helped pave the way, to discuss his brilliant new book, Fire Inna Dancehall. We reflected on dancehall’s journey from inner-city Kingston to the world, the migrations, masculinity, faith, freedom and resistance carried in its riddims - and the culture’s enormous influence on hip-hop, grime and global culture. We also got into the institution that was Sting, sound clashes, VHS tapes, why Derek once had to go into hiding and, of course, why dancehall can’t stall. Conversation could've gone on for days...but, alas, the producer had to call time 🤣. A rich, lively conversation about the beauty, brilliance and complexities of one of Jamaica’s greatest exports. 🇯🇲🔥 Streaming via Fane Online from 4–18 September. Link in bio/stories. by @derekabard
