Feels surreal and unfair to be writing this, that you won’t watch Naya walk or see snow again. That you won’t get overly excited at the next house guest or walk over to your leash when we are about to leave the house. That you won’t lay at my feet as I work or bound down the stairs with morning excitement. ⁣
⁣
You were my first dog, and we deserved more time together. When I excitedly, eagerly, and easily fell in love with my buddy, I never fathomed saying goodbye so soon. ⁣
⁣
You loved so unconditionally in a way that healed a part of me. It was a gift to care for you and for you to be our family.⁣
You were named after the place where daddy and I met, and I can already feel a giant space in our lives that you filled so beautifully and messily. ⁣
A hundred adventures in Colorado and the east coast and in-between and it will never feel enough.⁣
⁣
I don’t have many words. These waves of grief are painfully unforgiving and feel insurmountable at times. You were the best boy I could have asked for. ⁣
You didn’t deserve this - so soon, so rare and so unexpected. If there was a place where you could lay in the sun and chase squirrels and play with 1,000 balls forever, I imagine you there. ⁣
⁣
Cancer sucks. There will not be a day of mine on this earth that I do not miss you terribly and wish you were here with us, buddy.⁣
I’ll be with you all of my days and love you always, my Otto. by @derekallenschell
