Today I made a pilgrimage that I’ve wanted to make for most of my life. I traveled to Leipzig to visit my hero and attended the opening of the Bach Festival. I sat in the pews of the Thomaskirche, steps away from where he is buried inside the church, and heard his Magnificat fill the hall it premiered in. To say I was overwhelmed is a dramatic understatement. I then ran down the street right after to the Gewandhaus and heard Andreas Schiff play all of the Partitas, with an encore of the Italian Concerto.

Good day.

A wonderful and inspirational weekend at the Historical Performance Institute at Indian University for a conference focusing on Partimento/Solfeggi, and the preceding 16th-century pedagogical traditions (with a pinch of Brahms and Debussy). The rich scholarship was peppered with fun workshops and masterclasses. Other than the great music throughout, the community vibes were awesome. Some important taleaway:

1. The banjo lick from “Deliverance” is a “sol-fa-mi-re”
2. The Flinstones themsong has a Fonte at the bridge (not a ponte?!).
3. Gilbert and Sullivan sounds awesome on the harpsichord.

Hello friends!

I wanted to let you know about a current fundraising campaign we are running with Rossini Club to fund the remaining costs of my album, which will feature Del Sol Quartet, clarinetist Nicholas Davies, and a vocal quartet organized by soprano Rose Hegele. The album includes my Clarinet Quintet "Oh World, Goodnight" and String Quartet No. 4 "Kaddish", both of which intimately connect to the Yiddish world. Please click on the linktree in bio for more info and to see the perks for donating (from receiving the final album to getting a private concert!). by @derekdavidcomposer
