My dad now has a foundation named after him!

The tl;dr version: Fred Powell is a national champion wrestler and Hall of Famer. He built one of the most respected wrestling programs in the region as head coach at Slippery Rock University from 1967 to 1991. Under his leadership, he compiled a 215-105-4 record, produced multiple All-Americans, and at 84 is still in better shape than I’ll ever be.

Full disclosure: I’ve long hated driving sims. Every time I get behind the “wheel,” I don’t even last a lap before I crash. Then I just treat it like a fancy version of GTA. I know sims have real-world merit, but I never saw the appeal. Why sit in front of a monitor when you can be outside in an actual car?

So when @xp1drive invited me to try out a beta of their driving simulator, I was all prepared to slide and smash and give up in bored frustration. But the opposite happened. I started driving. And kept driving. The wheel delivered viable feedback. I could easily explore the limits of adhesion. After I successfully completed a few laps, I realized I could actually improve my skills with some proper seat time.

While I won’t be buying a rig of my own anytime soon, I think anyone who does have one would really enjoy trying out #XP1. It works with most existing hardware and doesn’t have crazy GPU requirements. Marble says this intentional—all of the processing power goes to accurately capturing the physics behind the driving experience. It’s still in beta, and there’s only one car and course (for now), but the foundation is definitely there. by @dereklanepowell

Talent rarely thrives in a vacuum. It’s nourished by encouragement, cultivated through confidence. Michael Mauer @therealmichaelmauer and Dwayne Vance @dwaynevance are so candid and honest in their conversations—how they started, how they found their voice, and ultimately made it their own. I think witnessing this type of discussion is the best kind of inspiration for an artist, because it’s a reminder that we all share a similar journey. Developing our creative skills takes time and effort. Even the most talented person can be susceptible to doubt. And we thrive most when we stay curious and true to ourselves. Every time I watch this episode I’m reminded of that.

I could have spent days wandering the Porsche Vault, lingering in the Workshop, meandering through the Museum.

What a beautiful way to conclude this season of Driving Design. Thank you for reading and watching!

The love of power and muscle cars unites Omead Dorandish and Brendon Vetusky @tuske427 in this episode of Driving Design. Then there’s the theme of duality: how nature and supersonic aircraft coexist as inspiration…and how great design can be either beautifully sophisticated—or delightfully lowbrow. Or, honestly, sometimes both at once.

Recently, Ford announced it would be demolishing the “Glass House” which has served as its World HQ since 1956. I’m grateful that we had the chance to film in the auditorium of this iconic building. On the flip side, we were one of the first to inhabit the halls of Ford’s new design center. (There’s that duality again.) As an avowed plane nerd, I relished the opportunity to shoot inside @michiganflightmuseum (Thanks for the mug, Francesca!)

How would you express design language outside of a visual medium? Mitja Borkert @mitjaborkert describes it beautifully through the artform of music. It can be a composer, a song, a style. One discipline can inform the other, and vice versa. In this episode of Driving Design, Mitja and Craig Callum @cforcraig explore this idea—in conversation and also through illustration. Then there’s the concept of design DNA: how do you establish one for a brand? Maintain it? Evolve it? It’s a topic ideally suited to these two designers: they’ve each spearheaded design at not just one major brand in their respective careers, but two. Also: check out the quality of those sketch pads.

Visiting the Lamborghini Headquarters is a uniquely Italian experience. Most of Lamborghini’s operations take place within this massively sprawling campus. The factory is a meticulously intricate and efficient work of art. And there’s an espresso bar in the cafeteria! (Obviously.)

Our career trajectories often hinge on a single Sliding Doors moment: what if we chose one path over another? And yet, sometimes fate has a way of routing us to the same ultimate destination. In this episode of Driving Design, Jimmy Liu @toy.inc and Ken Lee @kenlee815 discover that they went to the same high school, several years apart. They were both fascinated with cars and design. And while their paths diverged early in life, they now find themselves meeting up as peers in present-day.

Nissan’s Zawa Heritage Museum is an incredible time capsule. It’s filled with hundreds of Datsuns and Nissans from nearly the inception of the brand. Every single example is meticulously preserved and maintained.

And the Skyline Hallway! Buried deep inside the design center, this beautifully lit and presented space is also a functioning corridor for Nissan employees. But I knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to capture it on film.

Plus: Karting in Tokyo!

What do the Vatican Museum, a ’67 Firebird, and anthropomorphism have in common? They’re all discussed by Raphael Molina @raphaelmolina and Brendon Vetuskey @tuske427 on this episode of Driving Design.

Appropriately, a lot of these conversations unfold within the walls of GM’s Tech Center—itself a stunning example of midcentury modern architecture. Designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1956, the Tech Center was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2014.

What a great way to kick off the series. Alex Alexiev @alexiev_alex and Craig Callum @cforcraig share an appreciation for old cars, the simplicity of form, and how those elements influence their own current design philosophies.

Shooting at the McLaren Technology Centre was incredible. It’s been the backdrop for “Andor” and “F1,” but take away the movie magic and the place is even more stunning. Seriously, there’s not a bad angle anywhere.

Oh, and that title sequence! What a fun ride. I wanted to channel the style of AMC’s “Rubicon,” which is one of my favorite openings of all time. (Shoutout to @karin.fong and @jeremycox for the decade-plus inspiration.) The line represents a Hot Wheels racetrack, and as it courses through the textured landscape, dozens of drawings and easter eggs appear along its path. Leah Dubuc @gelsonsmarket took my chaotic thoughts and hit a home run in the execution.

I had the amazing opportunity this year to direct a new show for Mattel called “Driving Design.” It’s a six-episode documentary series featuring candid, one-on-one conversations between Hot Wheels and major automotive OEM designers. Little gems of films where the love of design is simply the starting point. The trailer gives a sneak peek into each of the episodes to follow weekly starting September 19.

This project took me around the world with a crew that I love and trust like family. @francescalynnnn thank you for keeping my t-shirt tags tucked in and producing one hell of a project. @alonsohoms you made every shot gorgeous. @pdegan I still can't believe you thought of me for this project. And props to @alexisboozersterling and the entire team at Mattel for shepherding such a smart idea from concept to reality.

When I was a kid, my friend Kurt lived directly across the street. There was a rock in front of his house that we named “Hot Wheels Rock” because of the car-sized channel running along its spine. We launched countless cars down that rock over the years. It only felt right to launch a few more in honor of this project. by @dereklanepowell
