Aurelia Trio: three voices woven together by a golden thread.

We’re the Aurelia Trio—a Calgary-based piano trio made up of Daryna Friesen (violin), Porter Allred (cello), and Derek Lee (piano).

Although we officially came together as a trio in May 2026, our musical partnership began before then through other chamber music projects and friendships developed over the past year!

Derek and Daryna are currently studying in the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Calgary, with a focus in music performance. All three of us also attend Mount Royal University Conservatory’s Advanced Performance Program. We’re excited to continue growing together as musicians and exploring what we can create as a trio!

We are SO excited to represent Calgary Pro Musica’s Young Artists Development Program for the 2026-2027 season!

🎹 JUNIOR RECITAL

🌟PROGRAM:
Bach - Prelude and Fugue in G minor BWV 885, WTC 2
Haydn - Piano Sonata No. 33 in C minor, Hob. XVI:20
Chopin - Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23

🗓️Sat. March 7 @ 6:45pm
📍Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall

"This junior recital program is based on three elements: narrative drama, experimentalism, and the Pathétique (passionate) language. The minor keys of these three pieces, considered "tragic" keys of their time, cause each piece to evoke elements of sorrow and passion. There is a common element of cyclical tension in hope and struggle; moving from extreme beauty to a pull towards the minor home key. A shared narrative is established in several ways: Bach employs rhetorical architecture and dialogue, Haydn incorporates constraint and elegance, and Chopin features vehemence and vulnerability. These three pieces pushed beyond the boundaries of their time and challenged the contemporary limitations of expression."

🇦🇹 What an unforgettable trip to Vienna these past two weeks. I've had the pleasure of visiting the residences and graves of Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, and Schubert — an experience I've gained a deeper connection to with these preeminent composers. I also have witnessed the one and only Grigory Sokolov perform in the Wiener Konzerhaus, as well as had a chance to perform in the Bank Austria Salon and the Ehrbar Saal.

Each day in Vienna has been nothing but inspiring and appreciating. Despite the phenomenal architecture and rich, ancient history behind each building, there are also stories all over this city that define human creation. Even though it was exciting to see the musical, royal, religious and political history of Austria, it was paramount to listen to the stories of people that shape us into who we are today. When we listen, we are reminded of the resilience humans have to face through the universal darkness, and we rediscover the empathy and curiosity that cause us to connect and understand each other. With time, reflection, and a fuller consciousness, other stories other than your own allow you to see yourself in a new light — someone who is capable of doing more than they realized. by @derekleepiano

🙏 What a phenomenal year it has been—filled with meeting incredible musicians, embracing more musical opportunities, and developing further as a performer. God has truly given me a greater push in heights I'd thought were unattainable just a year ago. It's been quite a journey to reach where I am today—one that has made me wiser and more mindful of my community, artistic practice, and overall well-being. I cannot wait to explore what the future brings me; all that cannot be made possible without my peers, professors, and family.

Thank you.

🎵 In the incredible Gloria Artis International Music Competition, few competitors are selected worldwide to perform in Vienna, Austria. This prestigious competition contains categories such as solo piano, chamber music ensembles, and classical vocal performance. Held annually, it offers a remarkable opportunity for musicians of all ages to showcase their talents on an international stage.

At the University of Calgary, three gifted pianists–Jerry Liao, Derek Lee, and Roswell Reyes–have been honoured to perform in Vienna this coming May. Not only will these three people debut in several of Vienna’s beautiful concert halls, but they will also immerse themselves in the rich musical legacy of the “City of Music” where legendary composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert, and the Strauss family once lived and worked. This unique opportunity will allow them to present their music to a global audience and attend a once-in-a-lifetime concert featuring the world-renowned Grigory Sokolov.

In addition to playing in the IV Gloria Artis Talents Festival in May 2025, these three will also take the stage at the iconic Ehrbar Saal on May 9th, 2025, performing substantial works by Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn, Liszt and Debussy. Located in the heart of Vienna, the Ehbar Saal has hosted some of the most influential names in classical music history, including Johannes Brahms, Arnold Schoenberg, and Gustav Mahler.

🎹 This extraordinary opportunity is made possible by the generous support of the Bell Family Fund, along with the invaluable guidance of Dr. Jani Parsons and Dr. Lana Henchell who have played a key role in nurturing these students’ talents. Liao, Lee, and Reyes are all pursuing their Bachelor of Music in piano performance at the University of Calgary. by @derekleepiano

🎹 Happy (Late) Piano Day!

"Piano Day, an annual worldwide event founded by a group of like-minded people, takes place on the 88th day of the year because of the number of keys on the instrument being celebrated. Established in 2015, it is now well known across the globe. Every year it provokes special concerts, onstage and online, as well as radio shows, podcasts, and playlists."
