ā€œI’m not ā€˜self made’. I’m community made, I’m family made. I’m land made. I’m ancestor made. I’m made up of everyone and everything that made me exist outside just myself.ā€ - unknown

It’s always emotional for me to go back. My grandpa’s farm has always held a lot of power for me. It was a right-of-passage as a young boy to get invited to work the summer moving irrigation pipe. It’s been a place of reverence, learning, peace, and a furnace of labor where I grew to LOVE the feeling of hard work. I don’t think there is a place that holds more spiritual power for creating who I am today. It wasn’t just the place, or the work, but my Grandpa and my Uncle who were my long-suffering teachers. They’ve both passed on now, but my younger cousin Alex is now the care-taker of the farm. He reminds me so much of both of those great men. Yet still so different. So kind and loving. As a kid, Alex always impressed me with his talent for drawing and art. He’s taken that artistic touch and applied it to his stewardship of the farm. Constantly beautifying and organizing the work places and fields. One afternoon last July he took the door off his 1974 Bellanca Citabria prop plane so I could film without a window in the way, and took me up to survey the crops and surrounding farms, reservoir, and West Yellowstone in the distance. I’m grateful to Alex for preserving the farm as a place of pilgrimage where I can return to remind myself of this piece of who I am. by @derekpueblo

VAHA’A | THE DISTANCE BETWEEN will be released this week.

What a beautiful journey this has been.

3 years ago, this film began as scattered thoughts, emotions, and experiences written down in moments of reflection. To now see it become something tangible, something real that can be shared with the world… phew! It’s been one of the most healing experiences of my life.

Our festival run has been incredible, and I’ve been grateful for every screening, every conversation, and every person this film has connected with along the way. But more than anything, I’m excited to finally release this film into the world.

There’s a real fear in vulnerability. Fear in taking the thoughts that live inside your mind and placing them on screen for others to see. My heart would beat out of my chest every single time this film played in a packed theater because it comes from very personal places. From my experiences with masculinity, fatherhood, culture, grief, love, and healing.

But if this story can help even one person feel seen… challenge a perspective… spark a conversation… or inspire healing in any way… then every second of this journey will have been worth it.

VAHA’A releases Wednesday, May 27th. by @derekpueblo

WE WON BEST SHORT FILM! It’s been an incredible weekend with the LA SKINS FEST. From our showing on opening night at @creativeartistsagency to being recognized on awards night at the Hardrock in Hollywood, it’s been such a special weekend. Couldn’t be more grateful to @skinsfest for creating an incredible space for indigenous voices to prosper. I’m inspired by the work they do šŸ™šŸ¾

Congrats to the @vahaamovie team, especially to the cast and crew. Their talent and skills really allowed for this film to be what it is. Ofa atu šŸ¤™šŸ¾ taken in TCL Chinese Theatres by @derekpueblo

Farm Vignette Part 2: This was my grandpa’s favorite song. I’m pretty sure all of his grandchildren heard him singing this song even before we left the womb. We only had about 40 head of cattle when I worked summers on the farm. Our main job on the farm as ā€œpipe changersā€ was to carry the irrigation pipe about 50 feet to the next section of the field that needed to be watered. We moved the hand lines at 4am and again at 4pm, giving each section about half a day of water. In the morning, it was occasionally so cold there was ice on the crops and pipe. In the afternoon it was often in the 90s. We’d have giant horseflies biting us while we carried the pipe, and we couldn’t swat at them while carrying the pipe. Their bites hurt like hell and left welts. Now, the pipe feel light to me, but as a 12 year old, they were quite heavy, especially when still filled with water. My grandpa grew wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, alfalfa, and canola a couple of years. Most of the crops started off just a few inches tall at the beginning of the summer, but by the end of the watering season they’d be up to our waists, so we’d carry the pipe a little higher so we didn’t have to push against the tops of the plants to move. The canola actually grew to 6 feet tall and we had to carry the pipe up over our heads. The potatoes were probably the biggest challenge because they were planted in elevated rows. We’d do our best to not damage the plants by stepping on them, so we’d try to step in the ditches, but it would be difficult as the plants grew larger and their vines could tangle our feet. And the MUD. We wore heavy rubber boots and aprons to keep us from getting soaked, but they could be difficult to move in the mud. It was a constant physical and mental struggle. I loved it. Especially sunrise over the Tetons. Every morning felt so cinematic. The golden light catching on every head of grain. I’d give anything to go back and do it all over again with my Grandpa. by @derekpueblo

Gratitude post: a little over two years ago I finally made the move to LA. I wanted to be working on feature films. Specifically action movies. Two weeks after making the move, I was 2nd Unit Directing a short action film where I reconnected with @stevebrownwrestler. He had been working with @garrettwarren for years on blockbuster action films like Logan, Avatar 2, Alita Battle Angel. Steve was very encouraging of my work on the short film. His kind words meant the world to me, coming from someone with his level of experience at a time when I had just left my comfort zone to start a new chapter. Steve invited me to join their team to help with previs on their next film. Learning to keep up with their pace and level of quality was a baptism by fire, but I loved it. I love working with people who care so much about their craft and the love of story telling that they give everything to make the film as good as they can. We share that drive for excellence, we never want to settle for ā€œokayā€. I’ve learned so much working with them both, and I’m excited for people to see the magic tricks Garrett came up with for @roadhousemovie. Garrett’s passion and enthusiasm pushed me to push myself and I’m proud of what we created. The film is a FUN ride, and I hope you enjoy it. Thank you again, Garrett and Steve, it’s been an honor being in the trenches with you. by @derekpueblo

If you watched @roadhousemovie SUPER closely, you may have spotted me in a couple of scenes, but my main role on @garrettxwarren & @stevebrownwrestler’s stunt team was behind camera. I helped shoot/edit fight previs, and cut/composite stunt scenes on set as they were being shot.

Garrett’s ā€œPositive Impactā€ technique involved shooting several passes of the same choreography and compositing them together. Each piece of filmed choreography ends up being a unique little puzzle to figure out which elements of each pass will be used and where the edit and compositing points will be. Unraveling that puzzle in previs and recreating the magic trick on set was where my attention was primarily employed. It was always a fun challenge and I’m grateful to Garrett and Steve for letting me be part of the process. šŸ‘ŠšŸ¼šŸ„° taken in Juan Dolio, San Pedro De Macoris, Dominican Republic by @derekpueblo
