Amazing weekend with the @johndaversa Big Band at the @bakedpotatojazzclub!!! by @derekpylemusic

Have had a blast recently playing the trombone/euphonium book for the show “Urinetown” at Harvard-Westlake School in LA!

Since moving back to town, I’ve spent the past year working on my doubles and am starting to feel as comfortable on bass trombone and euphonium as I am on jazz and classical tenor trombone. Huge thanks to Tony Rapacciuolo at @ar_resonance for making the switch between horns and mouthpieces so much easier for me.

When I was 19 years old, I heard a recording of the John Daversa Big Band for the first time and couldn't believe what I was listening to. Fast forward 5 years, and it's a dream come true to be included on John's latest album, #AmericanDreamers. The purpose of this album is extremely powerful, and it is without a doubt one of the most meaningful projects I've ever been a part of. This CD features the stories of more than 50 Americans protected by #DACA and brings awareness to the struggles faced by children brought to the United States as immigrants.
.
DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. “Dreamers” are immigrants brought to the United States as children from other birth countries. To protect Dreamers from deportation, President Obama started the DACA program in 2012. Intentions to phase out the program were announced in 2017, an attempt to strip over 700,000 American immigrants of their rights. Music allows their voices to be heard and can uniquely bring us all together as Americans.
.
At the time this album was recorded, we had no idea this project would go on to win 3 Grammy Awards in 2019. On June 18, 2020, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration could not legally end the DACA program, a major win for every Dreamer in the United States.

Really going to miss my grandpa, William “Bill” Pyle, who unfortunately passed away May 30, 2024 at the age of 91. The last of the original “Pyle boys” and the #1 nicest person I’ve ever met - we were all so lucky to have the best dad, uncle, grandpa, and great-grandfather ever.

Mike Fahn was one of the first valve trombone players I remember listening to as a kid. Absolutely amazing to finally meet at @jazzednet tonight and hang after the @johndaversa show!

Some exciting news - happy to be joining the team at @ar_resonance to help bring this amazing company to LA!

I’ve been pretty open that when I started ordering custom mouthpieces from Antonio Rapacciuolo 2 years ago, my sound immediately improved, and my entire life changed (in the best way). Those of you familiar with AR know that Tony is making some of the best trumpets, flugelhorns, and brass mouthpieces in the world right now in Torino, Italy, and they sound unbelievable.

Will be working the AR exhibit at the @jazzednet Conference in New Orleans Jan 3-6 and the @trumpetguildofficial Conference in Anaheim in May. Please come say hi and try these out!

For appointments and availability - happy to answer any questions at derekpylemusic@gmail.com.
