This grainy picture...a zoomed-in shot from a disposable camera photo...is the last time I'd ever see the World Trade Center. It was in March of 2000 return from our 1st trip to Brazil. We flew out of GIG (Rio de Janeiro) yhe night before and then did a quick layover in Sao Paolo to pick up passengers before taking a long redeye to Atlanta on a Delta MD11 trijet before flying from Atlanta up to Boston Logan on an L1011. We flew over Manhattan here at 37,000 feet and just had to get the best snapshot possible of the WTC. We were exhausted after being in Brazil for 3 weeks with lots of good time with family headed back up to that New England cold and going back to school. I was 17, in 11th grade, and living in New Hampshire with my family at the time. The Twin Towers looked so tiny from up there. by @derekr.smith

For the 1st time in over 5 years, popped the hood open of my '62 Tempest. That's a 4cyl half-V8 engine that Pontiac was experimenting with at the time, to save gas. This one's got the rare optional 4 barrel carburetor which gives it a little hot rod power. Have put a lot of work into this engine and car over the years. The air cleaner housing is something I picked up at Desert Valley Auto Parts...the yard is no longer there...and it was really dirty and rusty from sitting exposed for decades out in that AZ Desert heat. When cleaning it, I had noticed that it still had the old text on it. Very, very carefully, I masked off the text while it got sandblasted, primed, and painted. After removing the masking, I was afraid it'd look like crap but didn't look as bad as I had thought it would. Even carefully, with the same spray paint but with a q-tip, blacked out the edges to blend it. Very excited! by @derekr.smith

Doing some cleaning and organizing in my mess of a garage in preparation for artwork and bringing my '62 Tempest back to life. Came across the license plates from my father's '86 Toyota pickup that he bought brand-new when we lived in southside San Jose off Santa Teresa Blvd. I actually remember going up to Sunnyvale Toyota with my parents to pick it up; the neighbor's son next door...the house with the basketball hoop...drove us up there in his '70 or '71 Dodge Dart coupe and when we got there, all I remember was pointing between the blue and red pickups; for no real reason, I picked red. A simple base model truck with no a/c, a vinyl bench seat (be careful when wearing shorts in the summer), manual stick, and always had a radar detector in it. Grew up in that truck, lots of memories, used and beat like a truck, and was as solid and reliable as a tank. Lived in multiple states in it. Had it until 1997 when a work buddy of father's bought it and drove it from New Hampshire to South Carolina, where it blew a head gasket and went to the yard. by @derekr.smith

Decided to take a crazy risk but have been wanting to this do for years: whip up an Italian dish but not of the kind you'll find at a Tony's Restaurant in Brooklyn or heck, even in modern Italy. It's a 1,600 year old Roman lentil recipe made by a Roman chef named Apicius. I did throw in a little customization though...for meat, I used hot Italian sausage and being short on coriander, used extra cumin. Middle of the night and on a 3rd shift sleep schedule. Decided to do it: for the 1st time in 12 years, change the pool light bulb that I've changed only 1 time since owning my house over the last 13.5 years. I remember it was in the middle of the summer in 2014 when I changed it out for the 1st time and what a challenge that was! Burned out recently and replacing it with a white LED bulb. The flange was white from being covered in minerals and let it sit in a bucket of vinegar which removes the minerals...now it's shiny again for the 1st time in many years and looks brand-new...or close at least! by @derekr.smith
