I was saddened to hear about the death of my friend Chris “Suds” Sutherland last week. A world-class musician and a fixture of the Canadian rock and country music scene, Suds was the drummer in my touring band for a couple years starting with the First Time In A Long Time tour in 2008. Before and after his stint with me, he toured with/recorded with Doc Walker, Kim Mitchell, Streetheart, Saga, was the drummer for the Toronto production of Cyndi Lauper’s show, Kinky Boots, and much, much more. He was a powerhouse who hit hard and executed his parts flawlessly. I always knew my songs were in good hands with him behind the drums. In my opinion, a touring band should feel like a band of brothers/street gang - guys (or girls) who have your back out there on stage no matter what. On that tour and in the couple years that followed on the road with @boldermusic_tarv , @ghostboyviolin , Darren Savard and Suds, that’s how it felt, every night. Rest easy, Suds. My sincerest condolences to his wife Tina and family. by @dericruttan

August ain’t August without a trip home to Muskoka, Ontario AKA the Great White North AKA The True North Strong And Free. Always appreciate this time every summer I get to spend with my brothers. Bonus visit with my brothers’ families and my mom. Long live Canadian summers, butter tarts, 4-wheelers (ATVs), Miss Nelle’s ice cream, bagpipes, and shooting your grandfather’s shotgun. 🇨🇦💪 taken in Muskoka, Ontario by @dericruttan

Great few days with NSAI on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, having Bipartisan meetings (and sharing our songs and stories), with lots of Congressmen, Senators and their staffs, on behalf of the professional songwriter, and alongside the incomparable Bart Herbison, Jennifer Turnbow and the great Lee Miller. Great, productive trip. Thanks DC for the hospitality.

Really great, inspiring night last weekend sharing songs and stories in Hopkinsville, Kentucky at the beautiful Alhambra Theatre with my friends Brice Long, Casey James and Tony Arata. Over $121,000 raised for Brice’s Back2Back Foundation benefiting folks in Trigg, Christian and Todd Counties in Kentucky. Great night!

41 # 1 songs. 75 million albums sold. (The other guy in this picture, not me). As a kid growing up in Bracebridge, Ontario, I’m betting the only reason I even knew there WAS a Tennessee River was because I heard the Alabama song. What a treat it was last Saturday for me and two songwriter buddies - Tony Lane and Tim Nichols - to share the stage and play a songwriters round with Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry from Alabama - and in the band’s hometown of Fort Payne, no less. Randy and Teddy were as down-to-earth, friendly and humble as could be, and have such respect for songs and the craft of songwriting - they really made us feel appreciated and welcome. Highlights were hearing Randy, Teddy and the band burn through “Tennessee River” and “My Home’s In Alabama”, and Randy giving me two thumbs up after I played “Main Street, 1979”. When I told him I grew up in Canada, he said, “Man, a lot of great music has come out of there”, and talked about how he loved the songs of Randy Bachman and BTO. Thanks Alabama, Greg Fowler, Tony Conway and the city of Fort Payne, Alabama for the hospitality. Margaret got a chance to tell Randy about seeing the band in the late 70’s at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach when she was in high school. Pretty cool. We each had our picture made with him and he smiled way bigger in his picture with her for some reason 🤔
