⭐️ Spot The Skin Cancer ⭐️

Early detection is the absolute key to good prognosis when it comes to melanoma. Melanoma caught early is highly curable; caught late, it’s a different conversation entirely.

Most people would not suspect that this is melanoma. With the naked eye, the suspicious features aren’t visible.

Dermoscopy lets us see pigment patterns and vessels invisible to the naked eye, which is why a 10x lens beats a good guess every time.

Dermoscopic findings to look out that can help find the diagnosis of melanoma:

👉atypical pigment network with thickened, broken lines
👉blue-white veil over raised areas
👉irregular streaks and pseudopods at the periphery
asymmetric dots/globules
👉regression with peppering
👉polymorphous vessels on the amelanotic ones
👉shiny white lines under polarized light

I stand with Dr. Fauci and science.
He guided us through the pandemic during a very scary time. I’m grateful for those who choose science, service, and the courage to lead in the face of uncertainty.

Photos from 2020 when I got my first 2 COVID vaccines, for which I was very grateful.

I grew up watching my mom wear white gloves while driving. I used to think she looked crazy. 🤪 But I later realized she was ahead of the game than everyone else…and that older Asian women knew what they were doing!!

Sun-protective gloves have gone from looking unusual to becoming part of many people’s daily routine—and for good reason. UVA rays penetrate car windows and contribute to photoaging and skin cancer risk.

If you’re spending time behind the wheel, protecting your hands and arms is one of the easiest habits to adopt. If you haven’t jumped onto this train yet, what are you waiting for??

My answer to how many pairs?
8!

My derm friends, how many pairs do you own? I know it’s about the same. 😂

It has been one of my biggest honors to Chair the AAD Academic Dermatology Leadership Program (ADLP) this year (and next!). This program aims to equip budding young academic dermatologists with outstanding leadership training so they can continue to become our future academic dermatology leaders. They are paired with a senior academic dermatology mentor all year with monthly calls, in addition to attending numerous trainings throughout the year. Strength assessments, speaking with confidence, mediation/facilitation skills, finances in academics, how to lead a team…these are only a few of the topics that are covered.

I attended this program as a junior faculty member 14 years ago and some of the skills I learned here are the most valuable that I’ve ever learned.

Community. Inspiration. Encouragement. Sharpening. This is what this program is about.

So grateful for all the administrative organizers who make this happen, the faculty mentors who generously give their time to our participants, the faculty speakers whose knowledge is invaluable, and the participants for being so committed and engaged throughout the whole program.

If you’re an academic dermatologist who is 9 years or fewer out of residency or fellowship, please consider applying. It’s a competitive selection - we only choose 20 participants per year. But if you do get selected, it will be one of the best experiences of your career. Guaranteed.

My first official day at UT Southwestern Medical Center!

While leaving Northwestern has been bittersweet, I’m truly excited for this next phase in my career. I’ll still be seeing patients (my first true love of medicine is and always has been my patients themselves), but I’m looking forward to growing in my administrative roles. Leadership frequently entails tons of administrative work - because that is how vision, goals, growth, and positive change get implemented!

Love my new office and excited to work with our Chair of Dermatology at UTSW, Dr. Joe Merola, who happens to be a good friend of mine and someone I deeply respect. 😊

Taking new patients starting in August. Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces in the future, as several of my Chicago patients will be traveling to Dallas to see me! 🥰

Onwards and upwards! ☀️

Last night was our dermatology residents’ graduation night. Each year it’s so special because it’s a chance to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of each of them, in addition to celebrating the amazing people they are as humans. It was especially meaningful because I was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year Award…and because it’s my last residency graduation at Northwestern before moving to Dallas. 😭

I love these residents so much. One of them I’ve known since he was a medical student; 3 of them I’ve had the honor to precept in Residents’ Oncodermatology Continuity Clinic; and all of them I have truly enjoyed teaching, mentoring, and working together with. 💜

Adding photos of some of my beloved colleagues and other residents too. 🫶

I love you, my Northwestern family! Congratulations to all the graduates and so excited to see all that you will do in the future! 🎉🥳👏🎊🙌 by @dermdoc.jen

Jayne did it!!

Happy high school graduation to our beloved middle child! We are so proud of you, not only for all your hard work and accomplishments, but for all your personal growth and strength over all these years. We love you so much!!

It’s crazy watching your kids grow up so fast before your eyes. I feel so blessed that not only do I love my kids, I like them. I really like them. I love hanging out with them, talking with them, doing things together. I’m in denial that another one is flying the coop and I won’t get to see her every day in the house 😭, but I’m also so excited for her future and knowing that the Lord will guide her no matter what.

If you see me around, give me a hug. Lots of changes going on around here, but it’s all for good. 💜 by @dermdoc.jen

Today was my last clinic day at Northwestern. 😭 Next month, I will be starting my new position as Vice Chair for Academic and Faculty Affairs of the Department of Dermatology and Assistant Designated Institutional Officer (DIO) at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX.

For the past couple months, I have cried on and off…with my friends, colleagues, and patients. Knowing for a year that this day was coming didn’t make this day any easier. I am leaving after 11 years of loving and caring for others, while being loved and cared for. What else could I ask for? Relationships. That’s what life is truly about. 💜

My nurses Britt and Natalie put together an amazing farewell in my honor last week, for which I am so utterly grateful and was blessed by. And over the past several months, I have received innumerable flowers, gifts, and heartfelt cards from my patients, colleagues, residents, and students. For every one of you, just know that these expressions of your love have truly filled my soul. I am going to miss every single one of you and will remember you forever.

Knowing that I was leaving, I took all the opportunities to take a ton of photos, with my colleagues, nurses, staff, residents, students, and my patients! How special it has been. If you can see the love in these photos, just know that the love is real.

Thank you, Northwestern and Chicago, for being an incredible home for me and my family over the past 11 years. I love you all. 💜💜💜

“I don’t expect you to come!” One thing I learned about life is that you JUST SHOW UP and celebrate the people you love.

Happy birthday to my amazing big sister! We talk every morning, so it was super fun to surprise you. I hope you feel as loved as you make us all feel.
