Happy Prime Day! Shop a dermatologist’s top 4 acne picks before they’re gone ✨

@panoxyl benzoyl peroxide: Antimicrobial and anti inflammatory. Mildly keratolytic (unclogs pores) but overall best for inflammatory acne. Can be irritating on sensitive skin. Start with 2.6%-4% for the face. I choose cleansers over leave-on benzoyl peroxide because benzoyl peroxide bleaches linens (towels and clothes).

@anua_global azelaic acid: Azelaic acid is a multifunctional ingredient with anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti pigmentation properties, available in multiple strengths and formulations. Also safe during pregnancy. Anua has been viral online for good reason. Many azelaics feel gritty but I have found this to be more elegant on the skin. Hyaluronic acid, centella, and panthenol help soothe the skin and support moisture.

@herocosmetics Mighty Patches: Hydrocolloid helps to draw out excess oil and pus from juicier acne bumps. It also helps to maintain a moist, occlusive micro-environment that promotes wound healing. Most importantly, a patch acts as a physical barrier against picking and prevents further damage to the skin. (Some pimple patches contain active ingredients like salicylic acid - I prefer plain hydrocolloid for patches, and topical actives separately to control the “dose” that we’re giving the skin).

@katesomervilleskincare sulfur cleanser: Sulfur does it all. Less irritating than benzoyl peroxide but ideal for acne, rosacea, and other inflammatory skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and perioral dermatitis. OTC formulations range from 3%-10% but lower concentrations work best for sensitive skin. Sulfur is stinky! I recommend using at night instead of the morning. taken in Vista Dermatology by @dermdoctrish

I prescribe Accutane every single day in my practice. Here’s what I tell all of my patients going into fall! 🍂

👄Lip dryness is easily the most common complaint I hear on Accutane. Apply heavy occlusives like plain petrolatum or Aquaphor and extend slightly past the lip line, multiple times a day.
Some patients may need a small amount of topical antiinflammatory medication for more intense rashes around the lips. Talk to your doctor.
❌AVOID lip licking, and AVOID products including irritants and allergens like mint/menthol, eucalyptus, fragrance, or anything plumping.
❌No lip scrubs.

👃Nosebleeds are common on Accutane due to dryness of the nasal mucosa. Sit upright, lean forward, and hold pressure on the bridge of the nose for 10 minutes. Ice can also help to temporarily vasoconstrict (narrow blood vessels).
🤧To prevent: nasal saline gels and nasal saline sprays can be really helpful here.
Think about moisturizing your nose like you moisturize your body - bathe (with saline spray) and immediately moisturize (with Vaseline).
Consider a humidifier at night (but please clean it).
❌ If you do get a nosebleed, hold consistent pressure to stop the bleeding. No releasing to peek!

☹️ My patients with acne are often afraid to use thick moisturizers on the face. On Accutane we need barrier-repairing ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and humectants like hyaluronic acid. I also recommend that my drier patients transition to a triple lipid.
(And throw in a little Vaseline around the nose and lips.)
❌ Don’t scrub off or aggressively exfoliate dry skin.

🧴When it comes to moisturizers, boring is best.
❌ Don’t spend your life savings.

🐠 Fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids, which help maintain your skin barrier and prevent transepidermal water loss. Clinical studies show that 1g per day can cut Accutane-related dryness in half.
❌ Always consult with your doctor before starting any new supplement. taken in Vista Dermatology by @dermdoctrish
