Anagen (growth) phase of hair lasts between 2-8 years. Hair length is determined by this phase which is predominantly genetically determined.

Factors such as stress, hormones, nutrition, and medications can shorten this anagen phase. Most hair loss treatments and hair growth products are aimed at increasing the percentage of hair follicles that are in this phase and try to support growth.

The rest of this clip and its content I will leave to you for comment.

Melanin can appear on skin and nails anywhere. Majority of the time this is completely benign and it most certainly is natural and nothing to shame someone for. Normal, natural and a part of us.

*as with all things, if you notice any of this pigment changing, growing, etc seek evaluation from a dermatologist

I get it, as a cosmetic dermatologist, I’m supposed to care about and want to treat every little imperfection, but the truth is that I don’t.

I have always been an advocate of natural beauty and of course, as a woman myself, I understand the societal pressures that we are all under to look a certain way. I’m not trying to suggest that I don’t also succumb to these standards myself, but I also think that there is a way to carry confidence and to enhance one’s natural beauty without stripping away their uniqueness.

So if you are a woman like me who simply wants to preserve the natural beauty they already have, you’re my kind of person.

Share this with a woman, friend, sister who you think is beautiful. Follow for more real talk from a vulnerable, heart-minded cosmetic dermatologist. taken in San Diego, California by @dermdocwilliams

I always say, the more you hated it-the more you needed it.

Let’s talk about it, because this little cream does some BIG things. Efudex (fluorouracil) is a topical treatment for actinic keratoses — those rough, scaly precancerous spots that show up after years of sun damage and can turn into squamous cell carcinoma if we ignore them.

Here’s why I love prescribing it:

**1. It treats the whole FIELD, not just the spots I can see.** Cryotherapy freezes the lesions I spot in clinic — Efudex hunts down the ones brewing under the surface too.

**2. The inflammation means it’s WORKING.** You’ll likely get red and crusty for a few weeks (typical course is 2–4 weeks). Some redness and peeling is expected — that’s the cream targeting abnormal cells. But heads up: severe pain, swelling, or intense burning isn’t “working harder,” it’s your sign to call your derm.

**3. It may lower your skin cancer risk.** In a large trial of high-risk patients, a course of 5-FU cut the risk of squamous cell carcinoma needing surgery by about 75% in the first year. The long-term prevention benefit is less certain — but treating precancers beats waiting and cutting, every time.

The honest truth? This is not a cute, painless process. Your skin will be mad at you. But I’d take a few weeks of looking rough over a Mohs appointment with me any day — and I say that as someone who genuinely loves my job 😌 ALSO: many people note how much better/clearer their skin looks after.

One important note: Efudex can cause harm in pregnancy and isn’t for everyone (including people with DPD enzyme deficiency), so this is a decision you make *with* your dermatologist — not from a reel.

If you’ve got persistent rough spots, sun damage, or your derm has ever mentioned “field therapy,” ask whether Efudex could be right for you. Every skin is different and this isn’t medical advice — just your derm bestie telling you the truth.

Drop a 🔥 if you’ve survived the Efudex journey — or if you just got the tube and you’re scared. And save this for when you need a pep talk mid-treatment.

We are all so influenced by skincare trends and “glass skin” tutorials that even myself-a dermatologist can forget that our skin is a wondrously complex and beautiful organ.

I sometimes look at the keloid on my back, the hyperpigmented scar on my leg, the laxity of my abdominal skin after having my babies, the rough bumps on the back of my thighs (keratosis pilaris) and the dark spots on my face left behind from acne I had months ago and feel frustration and profound sadness that my skin is somehow failing me and I it.

But then I remind myself that the skin is an entire complex system
built to regulate our temperature, protect from infection, regulate hydration, test our environment, etc. and is constantly interpreting external and internal stimuli alongside our immune system to protect us.

So while perfect skin does not exist, it’s still pretty damn cool.

Be kind to your skin and most importantly kind to yourself.

Light exposure is one of your biggest enemies Let me save you three expensive mistakes:

**1. Tinted sunscreen. Every day. No negotiations.**

UV isn’t the whole story. Visible light — including blue light from the *sun* — triggers pigmentation in melanin-rich skin, and iron oxides, the pigments that make tinted sunscreen tinted, are what block it. Your sheer untinted SPF 50 is still doing something — it’s just not covering the full spectrum.

**2. Put the red light mask down — or at least pump the brakes.**
I know it’s trending. Many of these masks bundle in other forms of light (yes, including blue light) while trapping heat against your skin — and heat alone is a known melasma trigger.

**3. Respect blue light — starting with the sun.**
Blue light does drive pigmentation that lingers in darker skin, but here’s what nobody tells you: your phone, laptop, and TV emit a tiny fraction of what the sun serves — researchers estimate a week’s screen time equals about a minute of midday sun. So yes, turn on night mode (30 seconds, costs nothing), but know your tinted sunscreen is doing the real heavy lifting here.

Your melanin isn’t the problem. The unmanaged light exposure is. Fix all three before your next consult. 😘

Follow @dermdocwilliams for skincare that actually respects melanin-rich skin 🖤 Drop a 🖤 if you’re retiring the red light mask today.

There’s a lot of BS out there and A LOT of big bold claims with big bold price tags. But the thing is -skincare routines do not need to be complex and they definitely don’t need to be expensive. This routine includes all of the non-negotiables for healthy skin without costing an unnecessary fortune.

Clean, moisturized and well protected skin all for less than $100. Each of these also lasts several months so monthly cost would be roughly $30 or less. Cheaper than your daily coffee habit!

Save this list for your next skincare haul. Follow for practical, data-driven derm advice with no judgment.

Okay-we’re going there today. 😌

As a dermatologist, I see the aftermath of a LOT of things people are too embarrassed to ask about — including rashes after oral-anal contact. So let’s normalize this conversation, because shame doesn’t treat rashes. Knowledge does.

Here’s what can actually show up back there:

**Irritation and contact dermatitis.** Friction mixed with various skincare products can irritate the skin especially if you have sensitive skin.

**Bacterial infections.** The gut carries bacteria like E. coli that don’t belong on skin — the CDC notes E. coli can transmit through oral-anal contact. That means bacterial infections like folliculitis and bacterial dermatitis can occur after oral-anal contact.

**Yeast infections.** Warm, moist environment + disruption = candida having a field day. Itching, burning, redness with satellite spots.

**Viral STIs.** Herpes (HSV), HPV, and even syphilis can transmit through oral-anal contact and show up as sores, warts, or rashes. These need proper testing and treatment — not a steroid cream from your medicine cabinet.

The honest truth? Hygiene matters here — showering before and after, avoiding contact when there are any cuts, sores, or active breakouts, using barrier protection like dental dams, and keeping up with STI testing and vaccinations (HPV, hepatitis A and B). None of this is about judgment. It’s about your skin, and that’s literally my whole thing.

If something shows up and doesn’t go away — itching, bumps, sores, redness that lingers — see a dermatologist. We’ve seen it all, I promise you are not our most shocking patient. 😅

Drop a 🙈 if this was the health class talk you never got. Save this for the friend who needs it but won’t ask.

*Not medical advice — just your derm bestie telling you the truth. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you.*

Being a dermatologist I know more than most the risks I am taking with each of these decisions. But I also love a fresh set, pretty toes and sometimes I’m lazy. 🤷🏽‍♀️ at the end of the day, I’m literally just a girl.

Tell me, is there something you do that you KNOW is bad for you but just can’t quit?

Yea so these are ALL tinted sunscreens……

Here’s the part nobody told you: UV rays aren’t the whole story. Visible light — especially blue light in the 400–500nm range — also drives pigmentation, and the research is humbling. Studies have shown visible light causes darker, more persistent pigmentation in deeper skin tones than UVA does.

Your regular clear sunscreen? It does almost nothing against visible light.

That’s where tinted sunscreen comes in. The iron oxides in tinted formulas physically block visible light, and clinical studies have shown tinted sunscreen reduces melasma relapses compared to untinted SPF 50 alone. Same SPF, very different protection.

Your melasma game plan:

1. Switch to a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides — daily, rain or shine, indoors too if you sit near windows.

2. Find your shade. “Tinted” doesn’t help if it’s three shades off and you won’t wear it. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually reapply. It’s 2026 there’s no excuses, you can find your shade.

3. Reapply. Every 2 hours outdoors. Yes, over makeup. Yes, it’s annoying. Melasma is more annoying.

4. Remember sunscreen is one piece. Melasma is hormonal, chronic, and stubborn — it needs a full strategy, not just one product.

The honest truth: if you’re treating melasma without tinted sunscreen, you aren’t trying very hard.

Drop a ☀️ if you’re making the switch, and save this for your next sunscreen run.

Follow @dermdocwilliams for melasma truths and zero judgment.

Stronger does not mean better. The skin is a living, breathing organ that is highly reactive. While we all want quicker results we need to take our time with our skin. Low and slow will almost always be better with longer lasting effects especially in skin of color. #skinmaxxing #chemicalpeel #tcapeel #blackdermatologist #dermatologistreacts by @dermdocwilliams
