The devil is in the details… 🖤

A little behind the scenes of creating this haunting character.

This transformation involved multiple layers of special effects makeup, each carefully designed to bring the character to life.

Starting with a vinyl bald cap to alter the natural hair and head shape, followed by eyebrow blocking to remove the natural brow structure and create that unsettling, almost inhuman appearance.

Full black sclera contact lenses completely transformed the eyes, while additional hair was strategically applied to create a sparse, dishevelled finish.

The final stage was all about the paintwork — building depth, shadows, skin discolouration and subtle vein detailing to create a gaunt, lifeless complexion, finished with bloodwork to complete the look.

It’s amazing how combining different techniques can completely transform a face without relying on heavy prosthetics.

A special thank you to Director @samuelexton for trusting me with the design and creative freedom to bring this character to life. It’s always a privilege to help turn a director’s vision into something tangible on screen.

And an extra huge shoutout to our Ghost character - @scablett_ Scarlett Minney for being such a patient trooper!

I had such a fun weekend working with @esoteric.films - @samuelexton and @jesskahmichelle for their latest short film 🎬 “And with her came the birds”. I was tasked with designing the makeup for this ghost character. In collaboration with Samuel I came up with the scariest ghostly figure I could. Scarlett who plays the ghost, was such a trooper over both night shoots, a dream to work with. She was too scared to look at herself properly in the mirror! This means I did my job properly 😁 Amazing cast and crew, I’m looking forward to filming our next block in October! Thanks for having me team 🎬🩸🎥 @scablett_ #makeupartist #sfxartist #setlife #crewlife #shortfilm by @derossartistryfx

One of the more unusual effects I’ve had to create!

For this scene I needed to create the illusion of a face that had been grafted onto another person’s torso.

I started by taking a full face cast of the actor, then fabricated a silicone replica. The tricky part with the paint was that the face needed to look somewhat deceased and lifeless, but not completely — there still needed to be a sense of life left in the skin.

The finished prosthetic was then applied directly onto the other actor’s torso, blended and painted to make it feel like the face had actually become part of the body.

There was also a practical element to the effect. During the take as the actor sat in a bathtub filled with water, air bubbles needed to come from the mouth, so I built a small air system into the prosthetic using tubing, an air bag and a syringe, allowing me to manually create the bubbles on cue.

Definitely one of those strange SFX jobs where you find yourself thinking… how do I make a human face look believably grafted onto someone else’s torso and then make it breathe?! Love my job! Thank you @_cathoang for having me on the team for @chimerafilm_ and for @kelseyrowemakeup for your assistance and to @cxntconfessions on this one for your patience and beautiful acting skills also thank you @ella_frances for lending me your beautiful face for this cool effect 😁🎬🩸🩸❤️ Scroll for before photos of the face.

Loved creating this one and seeing all the different elements come together on set.

Not only do I make scary things, I make beautiful things! This plaster cast art piece bought the roof down with cries of delight and surprise! It was the best thing I’ve ever heard. There were two, so it was extra loud! Gifts like these are special, reach out if you would like to create something like this for yourself! I have been working hard for the last 5 weeks on the prosthetics and FX required for a short film called
🎬CHIMERA 🎬 🩸🩸

I made two fake torsos, cast from the lead actors, faces, fingers, ears among many other things.

This was an awesome experience for me and an absolute pleasure to bring @_cathoang visions to life. To see the joy on the directors face when an effect goes perfectly, is the reason I do what I do!

My job has so much pressure, to get the effect done right, many times in just one take.

Here are some pics of one of those effects that HAD to work the first time.

A skin ripping scene right at the end of a long filming day. It’s so much pressure when you have a whole crew depending on your work to go right so everyone can go home on time.
Is it any wonder after jobs like these I need a month to recover!!!!

I wouldn’t live any other way. Bring on the next project 🎬🎬🩸🩸Thank you @barnesproductsaus for your amazing products that I used in the fabrication of this effect.

Assisted by @kelseyrowemakeup 😘 Amazing and beautiful actor in these pics - @ella_frances - who I adored working with. Thank you for being such a trooper xxx #sfxmakeup #siliconeprosthetics #movieeffects #sfxmakeupartist #effectsforfilms by @derossartistryfx

Don’t hand someone else the pen to write your story.

People will doubt you. They’ll compare you. They’ll underestimate you.

Let them.

Keep creating. Keep learning. Keep taking the next step, even when fear tags along.

One day the very thing they questioned will become the reason you’re known.

Do what you were born to do. The world is waiting for your version of it. @chimerafilm_ FILMING STARTS TOMORROW for SFX 🎬🩸 All prosthetics and props made by me. What an incredible experience so far, I am so keen to see my work in action 🙌 Huge thank you to @kelseyrowemakeup and @ncunico09 so far for your help 🩸#sfxmakeup #sfxmakeupartist #setlife #sfxprosthetics And Huge thank you to @barnesproductsaus for their amazing products that get me through every time 👏🏻 by @derossartistryfx

My life is a reflection of creativity.

One day I’m helping someone feel beautiful. The next I’m sculpting wounds, monsters or prosthetics in a workshop.

It’s unpredictable, challenging, exhausting and often completely chaotic—but every project gives me the opportunity to bring someone’s imagination to life. It’s what I was born to do.

This career has taught me that creativity isn’t about perfection. It’s about curiosity, persistence, and finding joy in turning ideas into reality.

If you’re part of my life, you quickly realise there really isn’t a “normal.” Behind the scenes you’ll find face casts drying on the bench, silicone curing in the workshop, fake blood in the fridge, and conversations about creatures, characters and impossible ideas over dinner. You get to see behind the curtain—to the beautifully messy process where imagination becomes reality.

It might look a little crazy from the outside, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. 🎭

To be part of my world is to see behind the veil of normality. It’s to embrace the beautiful chaos, where imagination is welcomed, creativity has no limits, and the impossible slowly becomes real. #sfxartist #makeup #prosthetics #setlife #creator @chimerafilm_ And a huge thank you to @barnesproductsaus for their amazing products that help achieve all of my SFX 👏🏻 by @derossartistryfx

One of my favourite builds to date! 🪨

I was commissioned by @yeptheboys to create a realistic rock face that would conceal Eddie while still allowing him to easily get in and out—and most importantly, see out without giving away the illusion.

The entire rock face was built using chicken wire, plastic tubing, and paper soaked in liquid latex before being hand-painted to add depth, texture and realistic rock definition.

Once it was finished, we hiked it down a cliffside to the filming location and completed the final build onsite.

Unfortunately, just five minutes into filming, one of the boys slipped and broke his ankle, so the shoot had to be called off before we got to see the gag in action.

Wishing him a speedy recovery, and hopefully we’ll get another chance to bring this one to life soon.

A huge shoutout to @dose and Lana for planning everything and helping me with the heavy lifting and for just being all round awesome producers!! I had a ball as is always the case with these guys 😁

After 10 years of wanting to be involved in a moulage session for critical emergency service training, I finally got the opportunity last night — and it absolutely lived up to everything I imagined.

Huge thanks to @carlallison and Ryan Parry for making it happen and trusting me to be part of such an important training exercise. It’s so crazy how this opportunity came about and anyone who knows my story will know how special it is. Also a Huge shout out to @freemanfilmsau for all of your help and for buying me those delicious birthday cupcakes - thank you 🙏

In just 4 hours, our team transformed 20 patients with silicone prosthetics, trauma effects, injuries and a LOT of fake blood to help create realistic emergency scenarios for first responders to train with.

Massive thank you to @belinda.cartledge , @makeupbyabbeymatheson , @kelseyrowemakeup and Liv for all your hard work, teamwork and effort throughout the night. It was a huge job with a very tight turnaround, but everyone pulled together and absolutely smashed it.

Seeing everything come together and knowing the realism helps create valuable training for emergency services made the entire experience incredibly rewarding. Big thank you to @ses.sorrento for allowing us to use your space and for all the yummy snacks 🙏 #untilnexttime #moulage #criticalemergencytraining by @derossartistryfx

I am beyond proud to have worked on the latest official music video for @oceansleeper — “Break The Cycle”

I fabricated all prosthetics for this shoot day and handled the SFX makeup on the day, with the help of my amazing son @oscar_drs08 assisting me throughout the process.

Such an incredible project to be part of and so much fun bringing these visuals to life. @brock.dunstan was such a trooper from start to finish, allowing us to give him the worst haircut imaginable and sitting for hours throughout the makeup process.
Thank you for your patience.
Flick through to see before photos.

A Huge shoutout to @carlallison for your amazing work as usual but also for your total trust in my messed up brain! Also for your work on that incredible chair!! Killed it.

@freemanfilmsau for always being so amazing to work with, it’s seriously not work on days like these!

The rest of the crew were also amazing - apologies if I miss anyone -
