There was a 4’ x 4’ hole in the wall at the new @olympiaskateshopdetroit where the koolaid man seemingly had visited the previous tenant. Those guys had enough work on their hands with the space and the other location, so I told them I would take care of it. If you know me at all- you know I’m going to take the hardest way I can and complain the entire time. Bricks got expensive, so I spent the better part of 100 hours carving their logo out of granite scraps I had saved from Eliza Howell/ Hart Plaza and installing it into the koolaid man hole.

I’ve been skateboarding for almost 30 years and I’ve never lived in a city with a skateshop until today. Congratulations to @mrredghost and @beardedcheetah, they’ve been great friends for more than 20 of those years and I’m inspired by them and their hard work daily. Thank you both for doing what you do and trusting me with that hole in the wall.

Go buy some stuff and check it out at 626 Harper. by @derrrick

Recent work from Eliza Howell.

Used up the rest of the granite from Hart Plaza- made a patio and curved ledge. I probably won’t get a chance to build with anything like this again so I wanted to challenge myself a bit. I spent more than six hours cutting the radius pieces to go under the ledge. I hope I never pick up that forty pound saw ever again, but I’m pleased on how it came together.

More than likely, this is the last of what I build up there. This place was five years in the making and I don’t know what to do with myself now that it’s mostly done. taken in Eliza Howell Park by @derrrick

“Big Baby Bankta”
30’ x 16’
Granite, concrete, steel

I’ve had the pleasure of being able to say this two or three times now at this spot alone, but this is my favorite thing I’ve ever had the opportunity to build. Having access to these materials would be a dream for any builder and I really wanted to make the most of it.

The 6’x6’ granite tiles were parts of the original ground at Hart Plaza when it was constructed in 1975 and then removed during renovations in 2003. Each tile weighs about 1,200lbs and takes 10-15 minutes to cut from end to end.

The curbs going up the hips were custom cut out of scraps and broken pieces. Additionally, they’re uneven at the bottom and it more than likely will haunt me for the rest of my life.

24’ worth of polished granite were salvaged from a giant pile that was sitting at Rogue Park. They were originally used as planters on Woodward Ave, but still have no idea when they were removed. Some are still in use downtown, but they are laid in a different orientation and have aluminum rails on them (with skate stoppers 🥴.)

Framing for the base of the ledge was done on February 6th and not a single step along the way was particularly fun to do. I also framed the concrete sub-base too high and then spent more than a week cutting and grinding it down so the tiles would neatly fit. They still didn’t fit perfectly, but it doesn’t bother me as much as the curbs not being perfect.

Thanks to everyone that jumped in and helped at any point and thanks to the City of Detroit for letting me cook and for giving me the time, space and resources to execute these kinds of projects. I don’t think any other municipality has (successfully) built their own skatepark before and now we can say we have- because the best ledge in the world, now lives in Brightmoor.

Did some paint, lacquer and epoxy this morning, so give it some to chill and it’s all yours Saturday morning. I can’t wait to see everyone skate this. taken in Eliza Howell Park by @derrrick
