On this day, September 25, 1973, the young anarchist and member of the Iberian Liberation Movement, Salvador Puig Antich, was arrested by police in Barcelona following a shootout. After his group—opponents of the Francisco Franco dictatorship—was betrayed, plainclothes police officers staked out the Bar Funicular in the Eixample district. When Puig Antich and one of his associates arrived, the officers moved to arrest them. A struggle ensued, spilling out into the street and then into the adjacent building. Police fired in all directions. Wounded, Puig Antich returned fire, and a police officer, Francisco Anguas, was killed. Puig Antich was arrested and shortly thereafter tried by a military tribunal; he would become the last person sentenced to death by *garrote vil*, a fate that sparked an international campaign in his support and a plea for clemency. by @derryanarchists

Garvaghy Road: No Going Back!
Anarchists once again extend our full solidarity with the people of Garvaghy Road in their opposition to sectarian marches at this time. What we are witnessing on our streets right now, is the death throws of various sectarian figures and their organisations, in an attempt to capitalise on fueling hate and division for their own agenda's.
Anarchists across the world, as here in Ireland, firmly reject the division of our class, the working class, in all its forms. Be that by the State, its political classes and its apparatus who seek power, domination and supremacy through the deliberate division of our class. These acts of division repeatedly come to the fore and take many forms such as racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia or as we are once again witnessing on Garvaghy Road, sectarianism.
In times such as these, each of us need to be conscious at what is at play and reject the cesspit of what passes for Orange and Green politics. We know only too well that what is unfolding around sectarian marches that will set the clock back further on the victories made by our class. Especially in terms genuine community and workplace unity and solidarity. Long and hard fought battles against the our real enemies, the bosses and capitalism itself.
In Portadown, an area which has endured some of the worse sectarian atrocities over the last five decades and even today, local residents once again are being forced to accept a victory march by the supremacist Organe Order. As anarchists, and as anti imperialists, we firmly reject sectarian marches being forced through areas were they are not welcomed. In doing so, we again extend our solidarity with the people of Garvaghy Road and their opposition to the sectarian marches. Over the past number of decades in the six counties, anarchists have repeatedly stood with communities under siege from sectarian marches and will continue to do so. In Garvaghy Road today, we echo the call that there should be no going back. Re-traumatising communities through triumphant hate marches and the sectarian division of our class. by @derryanarchists
