I bought Revocation’s Existence is Futile when it came out in 2009 and have had a soft spot for technical death since reading a completely hilarious interview with Necrophagist, who earnestly sounded exasperated with how hard it was to make music that so few people are even capable of playing. This show was super fun, and you could tell how much these guys love the rituals of doing finger warmups and being super specific about all parts of their instruments and music. Defeated Sanity were a great opener, too, and had a rad kit with only tiny cymbals. It was fun seeing the pit so lively and watching these bands play so many notes. Caught @sqrrlflwr for their tour of the new record and she was as exceptional as the last time I saw her. What an awesome songwriter with a truly great band supporting her. Her solo cover of Tougher Than the Rest was incredible, but the whole set was so good. See her live if you can! taken in Richmond Music Hall at Capital Ale House by @dersteig

Debbie and I had a relaxing time in Cedar Island this past week, making art, reading, bouncing in the ocean and eating oysters. We visited the cattle on the island, walked Disco on the sandbars and went to an aquarium. It was a very nice trip. Debbie and I went to Hopscotch in Raleigh this weekend as a cute little getaway. There was a lot of hubub about the lineup this year, but there were some really delightful and cool shows I managed to catch, and here’s what I saw, along with the lunch I had at Bahvana and the cbd oil that Disco and I dosed on (turns out it’s fine for people). Hiding Places and Dagmar Zugina were definitely my highlights, but Parlor Greens, Organically Programmed, Spoils, and Basic and all great! Also we got super good cocktails at Rosebud, great food at the foodhall and drank some Burial beers. Hooray weekend trip! by @dersteig

I really wanted to see Shiner back in 2001 in Cleveland but I didn’t go, so tonight I finally got to see this amazing band. I love so much of their music and have been listening to them play kick ass music for so long, and am so grateful they came out to DC to do this show. Hey everybody, I turned 50! It happened back on July 23rd, but here’s a post and update on my life.
A bunch of people came over and watched me shuck oysters for two hours and then ate some cake with me. I suspect I ate between 40 and 50 oysters. Debbie got me a sick ass new guitar and we’re going on a nice vacation later in September. I bought myself some goodies, too. I’ve been back-and-forth to Pennsylvania a lot since April and I had a really good visit with Bill a couple weeks ago before I went up to Troy, NY for my August guest spot. I was able to spend some time with him just holding him and giving some back scratches. It was really lovely.
With everything going on between my two jobs and my parents it’s really felt like time is rushing by really quickly. These past few months have been especially surreal and slippery. Talking with clients while tattooing can be a great substitution for more traditional forms of friendship interaction so forgive me if I haven’t been out and about as much as I used to be. We’re all out here doing our best, myself included.
I mowed the lawn and made chicken wings yesterday and Debbie and I enjoyed them together. We’ve been doing a lot of snuggling with Disco, and make it out to the dog park pretty regularly.
Thanks to all the friendly magical creative people in my life. I love you all so much.

I went with Debbie and Michael to my place of worship on Saturday for a body check. It was awesome and I rode Apollo’s Chariot in the rain and it was like getting acupuncture. Thanks for doing a fun day with me, Debbie and Michael! by @dersteig
