A couple years ago, I remember staying up late working on “fake” projects, just creating for the love of it. I used to imagine what it would feel like to see my designs on real storefronts or products instead of just sitting on my screen.

Now I wake up and see my work out in the world on businesses, packaging, and spaces people pour their hearts into. And honestly, it still doesn’t feel real sometimes.

While putting this post together, I didn’t even realize how many people I’ve had the chance to work with this year. I’ve met so many incredible business owners, tried their products, visited their spaces, and watched them grow. It reminded me exactly why I started doing this in the first place. Being able to play even a small part in someone else’s dream is something I’ll never take for granted.

To all of my clients, thank you for trusting me with your vision. Watching your businesses grow has been such a blessing. And to everyone who continues to support me in any way, you truly mean the world to me.

Alhamdulillah for everything 🤍 by @deryakba

The inspiration behind my brand (reposted caption)

I get told all the time that mochi matches my aesthetic which made me realize that I never really told you guys what inspired my brand.
They say a girls first love is her father and I never fully understood that until my father passed away.

Mourning his loss was one of the hardest things I went through in this life. Coming home from work days to a house that was one person short felt so lonely. To lighten the mood in the house we adopted mochi.
Adopting him I knew that I was probably signing myself up for another heart break, but I couldn’t help it when I saw he was the only orange cat in the animal shelter at the time.

Suddenly you’re excited because someone’s waiting for you at home and hugging them feels like you’re letting all of your problems go for just a couple seconds. He gave me that cozy feeling of making my house feel like a home again. And it’s crazy I never understood the feeling until he was in our lives. The feeling of not being able to talk to them, but somehow they end up being your best friend.

That feeling got me through so many of my bad days. That feeling helped me re-build my business when I was mourning. That feeling helped me realize to appreciate the little things.

And I realized I wanted people to feel that exact feeling when I build their brand

I wanted their brands to feel like home. by @deryakba

Graphic design can definitely be overwhelming, especially when you’re first starting and have no idea what tools to use. Don’t worry every single designer has been where you are, so I put together this guideline to help you guys start somewhere.

As many of you know I’m a self taught graphic designer and these are all the resources that helped me get to where I am today. Pro tip don’t sleep on YouTube, it will be your best friend when learning graphic design.

Save it for later 🌞

The more I grow as a graphic designer, the more I realize that inspiration is literally everywhere. And I think one of the biggest things that has changed about the way I design is learning to pay attention to the little things around me.

I used to spend so much time looking through Pinterest, scrolling through other designers’ work, and trying to find something that would spark an idea. And while I still think those things can be helpful, I’ve realized that some of my favorite ideas have come from simply living my everyday life.

Whether it’s the colors of my morning coffee, the cover of a book I’m reading, the flowers I see while I’m out, the architecture of a building, or even the little things sitting around my office, there’s always something that can inspire a design.

I think as creatives, we sometimes put so much pressure on ourselves to constantly come up with something new that we forget to actually enjoy the creative process.

Just breathe, inspo will come to you. by @deryakba

This year has been filled with so many amazing clients, and I genuinely couldn’t be more grateful.

Every time I sit down to make one of these Instagram posts and look back at all the businesses I’ve worked with, it honestly blows my mind. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like I’ve worked on that many projects until I see them all together.

But the thing is, every single project is intentional to me. It’s never just another logo, another brand identity, or another project to check off my list. Every business has a story behind it, someone who’s putting their heart into building something of their own, and I get to be a small part of that journey.

One of my favorite things about this job is building genuine relationships with my clients. I love getting to know them, hearing their stories, and keeping in touch long after we’ve finished working together.

These are just some of the lovely businesses I’ve had the opportunity to work with this year, and I’m so grateful to every single person who has trusted me with their vision. by @deryakba

One of my favorite parts of my job is meeting amazing women who build these beautiful businesses. Turning their passions and dreams into businesses that they’re proud of.

This past month a worked with so many women owned businesses and it’s been so awesome to be apart of the different stages of their incredible journeys. I’ll never take this for granted.

I’ve been working on this plus some other amazing projects with @noorahgrandma1 for a little while and I’m so excited to finally show you guys what we’ve been working on!

I genuinely love seeing women create opportunities for themselves, live their dreams, and build something that belongs to them.

There’s is room for all of us to win and support each other 🤎 by @deryakba

A lot of people think you need real client projects in order to build your design portfolio, and I honestly didn’t realize how common this mindset was until people started asking me how to create “fake” projects for their portfolio.

But here’s the thing… there is NOTHING wrong with creating fake projects.

You’re still designing them. You’re still coming up with the concept, choosing the colors, creating the logo, building the branding, and showing what you’re capable of as a designer.

Clients aren’t necessarily looking for the designer who has worked with the most people. They’re looking for someone who can give them the results they want.

And if you’re creative and good at what you do, you can show them that without having 50 past clients.

Creating portfolio projects can actually be really fun because you can find inspiration literally anywhere. I love looking around my office, going outside, taking pictures of random things that catch my eye, and figuring out how I could turn them into a logo or brand concept.

A flower. A building. A coffee cup. A random object sitting on your desk. Literally anything can become inspiration.

So please don’t let not having clients yet stop you from building your portfolio.

Create anyway.

Let your brain roam free. Experiment. Make weird things. Make things you wish a client would hire you to make.

The more you design, the better you get. The more you share your work, the more people get to see what you’re capable of.

And eventually, those “fake” projects can help bring you very real clients.
