Every Monday, we celebrate the runners who have joined Team Special Children's Charities for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. This week's featured runner is Bradley Aleman. Bradley's story was submitted by his daughter Destiny, who told us about her dad's running career, her brother Garrett, and why Bradley decided to run to support inclusion!

"My dad started running about thirty years ago, before I was even born! I remember growing up and hearing the treadmill run early in the morning, I remember going on vacations to cheer him on at the finish line, anxiously searching through all of the runners so I could watch my dad cross the finish and celebrate everything he worked so hard for. I remember fighting my siblings and racing to be the first one that gets to hug him and telling him how we were so so proud of him, and how incredible we all thought he was. Over the last thirty some years, he has completed thirteen marathons and sixteen half marathons, several of which including challenges involving back to back days of 13.1 into 26.2 long miles! I never enjoyed running as a kid, but I loved everything about what he worked towards and everything about his race days. 'When I'm running, nothing else matters, no worries, no problems exist in that moment,' he would tell me when I asked him countless times how he could enjoy running so much. Running was an escape for him when times got tough, and raising six kids certainly called for tough times! (I'm allowed to say that, speaking as one of the siblings.) Early mornings, late nights, always finding time to run for his physical health as well as his mental health. In 2023, however, his running was put on hold..."

26.2 miles.

This is was by far the hardest thing I have EVER done. I finished slower than intended. I took some walking breaks. I cried. several times. and experienced pain I didn’t even know was possible. But I would do it all again in a heart beat.

An incredible experience that not everyone gets to say they’ve had. A part of the 1%. Running side by side with my sister, I would not have finished without her. The spectators cheering us on for the last 1.2 miles changed everything for me. I sobbed at the finish line. It was a feeling of relief and accomplishment like I’ve never known.

So much gratitude for those who helped make this dream happen—you know who you are; and always so much gratitude and appreciation to my dad who has been running marathons for years on end-inspiring me every day to continue towards my running goals

…until the next one 😉 taken in EPCOT by @des.l_97
