Some thoughts on the origin of Desertdweller.

This music is a means by which I attempt to find healing and liberation from the claws of oppressive and dogmatic ideologies used to control and destroy the human spirit.

Thanks to @vespertine_botanicals for the photos and helping me put this together.

Hello again and welcome.
I recently moved and have been hard at work getting my studio set up at the new place.
It’s been too long since I’ve felt fully able to get lost in the sonic wilds that Desertdweller resides in, but at long last I have finally punctured the firmament and bask unencumbered in the cosmic rays.
Contact with lunar nodes has been established.
A new chapter begins.

On November 21, Washington-based apocalyptic blackened doom project @desertdweller.official presents debut full-length Four Gates.

A mystical sonic journey through the four elements and seasons, Four Gates balances vast open doom grooves and aggressive death metal blasts that are eventually cooled by the melancholic atmosphere of black metal. The album is themed around apocalypse, lamenting the horrors of war, cataclysm, and loss, while also exploring the search for personal transcendence, finding purpose and growth through contemplation and collaboration with the natural world.

I am excited to announce that on November 21st I will be releasing Four Gates, the first full length album from Desertdweller. This album consists of the four offerings put out over the year of 2024, reimagined, reworked and combined into a cohesive journey through the four seasons. Now united by being remixed and remastered, the new life breathed into each track brings clarity and movement to the album that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Caving In is the third and final track on Endless Descent, and my favorite song on the EP.
The song is about the cultural obsession with war, violence and aggression.
With access to unlimited horrors on the internet and a 24 hour news cycle that is engineered to inundate our nervous systems with dread and fear, the west has rapidly become desensitized to violence.
As a result, even now outliers seek out ways to spread violence, death and destruction.
This is evident with the increase of radicalization and extremism.
The spreading popularity of ideologies that justify and support oppression and violence against others based on their beliefs, skin color, culture, gender, or sexual orientation can only lead to a living hell for all life on our planet.
The same sword of judgement you use on others will be used on your own head.
Writing this song helped me cope with the seemingly hopeless situation peacemakers and spiritual seekers currently find ourselves in.

Beneath the Ashes is the second track off of Endless Descent.
The main riff for this track initially came to me back in 2016.
I didn’t think it’d ever see the light of day but I held on it it until I wrote this song 6 years later.

With the growth of cataclysm, war, and violence, the places that used to provide sanctuary and solace are overtaken by greed and hatred.
While cities flood, megachurches lock their doors to keep survivors out.
Celebrity pastors hoard wealth and buy private jets, while families starve on the streets.
Governments spend billions of dollars on bombs and bullets while refusing to provide treatment for the sick and needy.
Church and state are united under the banner of Mammon.
The only path forward is spiritual and psychological liberation from conditioning and trauma by journeying inward through the underworld.

All the artwork I made for this release combines christian iconography depicting the mouth of hell and photos of various pits or caves I found in nature.
This was an attempt to portray a worldview that tormented me since childhood.
The worldview that hell and all of its demons were everywhere.
That not even the natural world in all of its beauty was free of the evil and sin that has permeated all things.
These images I made have even been called demonic and evil by people unwilling and afraid to look beneath the surface to see what is actually being portrayed.
The truth is the dark and demonic parts of these images were made by christians hundreds of years ago with the goal of causing fear and terror to drive all who saw into the arms of the loving God who created it all.

The Endless Descent EP was written in 2022/2023, and released in Summer of 2023.
This EP introduced more vicious, aggressive, and atmospheric qualities to the soundscape Desertdweller exists within, leaning further into the realm of black/death metal.
Here’s some additional artwork I made that I never ended up using plus some info about the first track:

The first track titled Monolith (At the End of Time) ushers the listener into a nightmarish landscape of atmospheric doom before plunging into a torrent of chaotic howls and feverish riffs.
Lyrically this song as well as the others on this release are more conceptual, leaning into apocalyptic themes while also building off of previously released songs.
Setting the scene in a world where humanity struggles under the foot of disembodied corporate entities and their power-hungry priests.
This cult of greed now openly feasts upon the planet that hosts it and its innocent population.
Out of fear of the destruction they are causing, the cult searches for a way to flee the planet and colonize distant worlds where they can continue on their destructive course.

Thanks for listening.

More background info for this EP coming soon!

Coming up on 3 years since the single Dune of Dead Gods was unleashed upon the earth. I recorded the instruments for this track not long after Shallow Grave, but before I could do vocals, my laptop crashed and I lost the song. I initially thought the track was dead and would never be put out into the world, but years later I found an MP3 file of the song that hadn’t been lost and decided to finish it by adding vocals.
On this track I leaned heavily into the psychedelic and experimental side of things, exploring more doom and drone elements rather than black metal since I’ve always had a love for progressive rock and doom. This song was my first attempt at writing something that danced between major and minor chords, and included trance inducing polyrhythms on top of a straightforward bass line. Feedback and harsh synths pepper the song with a rising discomfort as the vocals carry you on a mythical journey of spoken word, guttural howls, shrieks, and monastic chants.
Lyrically this song begins the exploration of myth and mysticism, building off the exiles of Sisyphus and Prometheus, shamanistic journeys into the underworld, and gnostic conceptions of the cosmos. These have become reoccurring themes present in my music, as Desertdweller is a means by which I explore philosophy and mysticism, and attempt to apply this to the current world in order to gain knowledge and understanding.
In an age where intellect is devalued and conscious thought is rejected in service of deceptive narratives fed to us as truth by a ruling class that has been raised to the level of gods, the desert remains a place of solace. Dune of Dead Gods is about searching for deeper meaning and purpose despite the seemingly godless world we are living in.

Nearly 4 years ago these first two Desertdweller tracks were released on bandcamp. In celebration I thought I would share a bit of the origin story of this project and these songs.

I began Desertdweller as a one-man-band in 2019 as a means of processing grief, loss of faith, and horror at the state of the world. The first two songs titled Shallow Grave and Guilt, were recorded during this period with a single SM57 mic and a borrowed Squire. I had just bought some recording software and although I had played and written heavy music in the past, this time was different. At a time when I was overcome by fear, anger, and grief I set up a single mic in the basement corner opposite my drum kit and pressed record. The drums I recorded would end up becoming the foundation for the song Shallow Grave. I plugged in the guitar I was borrowing and began experimenting with a bizarre tuning I had learned years prior. The songs then wrote themselves.

The lyrics for these tracks were written purely stream of consciousness. Guilt came from a place of horror and sorrow, lamenting the forests being burned down for corporate greed, and the hijacking of spiritual traditions by soulless politicians to control the masses.

Shallow Grave harkens the winter, a time of darkness and reflection. It laments the death of the sun, while also exalting the patterns of ascent/descent or death/rebirth observable in the heavens and on the earth. This track is about finding greater purpose through witnessing the cosmic cycles in nature and myth. It is also a call to end the search for safety, security and truth in external organizations, belief systems and institutions - false idols of our day and age.
“Light a fire of your own.”

Check em out! Thanks for listening.
