Denise Yaghmourian’s work incorporates materials such as fiber, textiles, paper, clay, and found objects, reflecting a unique fusion of traditional and contemporary practices. The meditative and hypnotic qualities of her creations emerge from combining industrial processes with labor-intensive handwork, exemplifying a deep sensitivity to materiality. You won’t see hooks and threads the same way after experiencing Denise’s work in person. Enjoy Denise’s work at our opening reception on October 3rd from 5-7pm. Fischer Goods x The Desert is So Hot 1710 N 16th St Phoenix AZ Denim Blues will be on view from October 3-November 2 at Fischer Goods in Phoenix, AZ. by @desertissohot
Lara Pleca’s work utilizes elements of folk art and textile patterns in her visual language. Her works are narrative; they tell stories of nostalgia and family history, much like a quilter. In the series that will be on view, Lara’s cyanotypes use hand-drawn weaver’s sketches to create a surface quality invokes a nod to the laborious skill of loom weaving and its history. Come engage with Lara’s work at our opening reception on October 3rd from 5-7pm Fischer Goods x The Desert is So Hot 1710 N 16th St Phoenix AZ Denim Blues will be on view from October 3-November 2 at Fischer Goods in Phoenix, AZ. by @desertissohot
Jenifer likes to think that her paper art career began in second grade, with gum wrapper bracelets and “cootie catchers.” In reality, she came to it after a career as a digital producer and project manager, always envious of the creatives with whom she worked. Five years ago, Jenifer took a course in paper engineering and the rest is history. Fabric forms also begin with paper patterns. The paper that she carefully and skillfully manipulates echo the same values of construction in meticulously produced couture fashion that emerges down runways every fall and spring. Enjoy Jenifer’s work at our opening reception on October 3rd from 5-7pm. Aimee Ollinger’s intricately crafted mixed media works dissect multiple layers of nature through microscopic lenses. She creates narratives that inform us about the complexities in our organic landscapes and elements. Aimee was inspired by the prompt to think about denim as a feature in her image-making. Tell us if you see the deconstruction of a broken-in pair of jeans when you come visit the work in person on October 3rd from 5-7pm. Fischer Goods x The Desert is So Hot 1710 N 16th St Phoenix AZ Denim Blues will be on view from October 3-November 2 at Fischer Goods in Phoenix AZ. by @desertissohot
Saskia Jordá is an interdisciplinary artist working on site-specific installations, soft sculptures and drawings. Her work has referenced the relationship between body and space, cultural identity, and mapping a sense of place. Saskia will be working with denim to create her iconic “knots” for this presentation. See Saskia’s work in person at our opening reception on October 3rd from 5-7pm. The show is open and on view from 10/3-11/2. Meet the Artist: Sarah Martiny After years of traveling the world as an environmental scientist, Sarah Martiny found a new passion in her discovery of cyanotype and botanical printmaking. Through these processes, Sarah is able to express the vitality of nature and her love of plant material. The Prussian blue color that emerges from the cyanotype process echoes the same effect that occurs when denim goes through a dye bath. Meet Sarah and enjoy her luminous work at our opening reception on October 3rd from 5-7pm. Fischer Goods 1710 N 16th St. Phoenix AZ Denim Blues will be on view from October 3rd through November 2nd, 2026. by @desertissohot
DENIM BLUES presented by @fischergoods and @desertissohot OCTOBER 3, 2026 - NOVEMBER 2, 2026 The Carmody 1710 N 16th St. Phoenix AZ 85006 Opening Reception 10/3/26 from 5-7pm Featured Artists: @lara_plecas @sarahmartinyart @denise.yaghmourian @aimoart @saskiajorda @jenifer.kwan Denim Blues is material-rich celebration of denim, indigo, and the many shades of blue that surround them. The inspiration for this show found its story on a dog day afternoon earlier in the summer. Lamenting into ice-cold beverages, we daydreamed about the days ahead that would once again allow for open doors, brisk morning walks, and gatherings that could be accessorized with our favorite go-to: the just-right-amount of worn-in denim jacket. With roots in workwear due to its durable and ingenious construction, denim originally existed as a strictly functional textile. It grew in form and fashion as artists and craftspeople have reimagined the seemingly endless potential in this iconic material. In this spirit, Fischer Goods and The Desert Is So Hot have invited a group of local artists to interpret this familiar cloth through their own practices, thus transforming a utilitarian material into something dynamic, personal and unexpected. Each artist brings a distinct relationship to material and process, revealing how craftsmanship, personality identity, and individual practice can transform something familiar into something entirely new. We timed this opening as a talisman; may this glorious indigo haze attract the cooler days, softer skies, and easier temps that are just around the bend. by @desertissohot
