Hi everyone! This WhatsApp community is for anyone who defines themselves as South Asian and a creative in the U.K. to chat, get to know each other and get important announcements.

I’m Deshna Shah and i’m a British-Indian artist. I have personally struggled to find my artistic community in the U.K. from education to opportunities, so this group aims to create that support network!

I believe that the most unique multidisciplinary collaborations happen by talking through your ideas with people from different fields so writers, photographers, filmmakers, poets, fashion enthusiasts, curators, musicians, artists etc this is for you!

Once in the group start by
1. introducing yourself (what you do, your inspiration, what you’d like to do, why you do what you do - basically your bio and artist statement), share your info in the form of links/photos etc.
2. Share events you’d like other creatives to go with you to! Share your own show details, opportunities and projects you’re working or wanting to collaborate on!

Socials include: attending exhibitions/shows and restaurant/chai get togethers!

Our first chai social will be in London, Sunday 15th October!

Post 2 from my digital sequence: A Point of Access

I have made this digital sequence to bridge the gap between what viewers see and why I am making what I am. These posts also act like coordinates to map my research. What feels to me like imagination is actually fragments of what I’ve seen, heard, felt, and absorbed. Conversations, sounds, images, paintings, moments. My perception is shaped by these remnants, and so the work becomes a collage of lived experience.

My sculpture Trace is less about language itself and more about how knowledge enters the body, through movement, copying, misalignment, and return.

How do we learn, and what do we carry forward?

In this three-part work titled “A Simple Model,” Deshna Shah (@deshnaart) reimagines learning as a journey. The artist maps this process as a passage through three states: absorption, processing, and deep recall. Across the work, symbols, diagrams, and her self-developed ‘Twilight Language’ move between clarity and code, inviting viewers to navigate, decode, and find their own pathways through the painting.

Rather than offering a fixed structure, the work opens up learning as something fluid where meaning is built, lost, and reformed over time.

What does it mean to see a thought as it forms?

In “Poetry None the Less Science,” artist Deshna Shah (@deshnaart) approaches painting as a space of active thinking where ideas are collected, reorganised, and set into motion. Diagrams, symbols, and calligraphies move across the surfaces, tracing a mind at work.

The result is a series of work that don’t settle into a single reading, but remain in flux, expanding how we understand perception, language and time.

Art is stillness. Stillness is an art. Sound brings you stillness.

An evening of immersing amongst Deshna Shahs @deshnaart ‘Poetry none the less than science’ exhibit @naturemorte_india . Each artwork gathered the residue of fleeting thought: conversations, emotional states, behavioural patterns that allowed us to move beyond simply viewing, into feeling. A softer way of being with the space, the sound, breathing deeply and being with the self.

Shah’s process reflects a way of working that embraces accumulation and reordering, where ideas are continuously taken apart and reassembled. The artist's subjects of inspiration and inquiry include Jain cosmological diagrams, quantum mechanics, calligraphic systems, and neuro-divergency.

Rather than resolving these disparate influences into a single system, the works create a space where different ways of understanding can coexist and overlap.

Bridging the gap between what viewers see and why I am making what I am. The scale of this painting really tested me, as it was the first time working on a canvas this large. Next to it, it feels like you don’t have a choice, but to really think about yourself within the game, just a reminder about perspective.

Bridging the gap between what viewers see and why I am making what I am. The sporadic mark making, half legible scripts and diagrams remind me of learning, and in turn a reminder to keep learning; so the canvas mimics the importance of whiteboards and blackboards as the souvenirs of discovery and/or a highly charged activated object (reference to Lygia Clark)
