RESERVATION REFORM: IS IT TIME TO RETHINK THE SYSTEM?

Reservation has played an important role in addressing historical social and educational disadvantage.

But India has changed significantly over the decades.

Today, an important national debate deserves to be discussed seriously:

Should the reservation system be periodically reviewed and reformed?

The discussion should look at facts — not slogans.

Does the present system adequately reach those who need support most?

Should social, educational and economic indicators be considered together?

Should benefits and outcomes be evaluated periodically?

And how can India balance social justice, representation and equal opportunity?

With caste enumeration included in Census 2027, India is moving toward a much larger evidence base on caste and socio-economic realities.

Reform does not necessarily mean ending reservation.

It can mean asking whether the system can become more targeted, transparent, data-driven and effective while continuing to address genuine disadvantage.

The time has come for an informed national conversation.

But the country deserves to ask some uncomfortable questions.
If the matter is already before the Supreme Court, why the street agitation now?
