Her pillows and bedsheets traveled across three continents, from Austria where she did her artist residency at Ars Electronica, to her hometown Taiwan, and finally here in the States, and she thinks this effort says a lot already. SOUR GUMMIES DON’T CRY Mengna Da Where is our agency in the age of algorithms? In this 20-minute lecture performance, viewers are given the power to control the artist’s body via a custom web app. The artist executes these commands in real time like a human avatar, while simultaneously giving a talk on data extractivism, digital labor, and queer cyberfeminism. Part of the ongoing series Artificial Agency, the performance examines our embodied relationship to data, digital products, and agentic AI. The participatory system redistributes power among audience, artist, and computer, aiming to reconfigure a more fluid type of agency. Mengna Da @yumedaaa (she/they/it) is a multimedia artist and researcher born in China and based in Brooklyn. Working across performance, interactive websites, games, and video installations, she investigates social & algorithmic systems of control and uses play as a tactic to complicate power dynamics and renegotiate agency. She received an M.A. in Interactive Media Arts from NYU Tisch, where she returns as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2025–27. Her work has been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Live music by Chienn Tai. Chienn Tai @desigh.llc (she/they) is a Taiwanese composer, pianist, and multimedia artist based in New York. Classically trained in piano and dance, her work moves between film scoring, orchestral ambient production, and live scoring with electroacoustic elements. Her work has been presented at Ars Electronica Festival (Austria), Paseo Project Festival, and SVA Theatre premiere, with performances at Carnegie Hall and National Concert Hall (Taiwan). She holds an MPS from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and serves on the board of directors at the Center on Contemporary Art, Seattle. Life Begins (2025) Short Film Original Score New York Premiere Screening (2026) // Pre-production 1 week, post-production 1 week. They edited as they shot, I scored as they edited. Pulled way too many all-nighters in one week, but without this intense experience, I never knew I could compose, arrange, orchestrate, record, program, and mix all the music pieces within such an incredibly limited time. Trying to play this 15 years later (yes getting distracted should be practicing the piece I’m playin next week.) Don’t remember the exact notes, but also don’t bother to look it up, because I’m no longer playing what it should be. I remember at 14 years old I wondered what it’s like to be “Playing Love” with love, and now in my late twenties I realize I’m actually playing love without love, a sentiment and emotion that is probably just too luxurious to be yearned for.
