From a journal entry in my little notebook to a finished, printed magazine,
I present to you Issue 17: Forever Yours 💌

As Creative Director, I developed the theme and guided the schedule and production of this issue. Forever Yours is a magazine built by the creative community at Urbana-Champaign that celebrates honest, unrestrained, and passionate creative work. I wanted this issue to feel free and expressive, giving our artists the space to create without limits.

Thank you to Isabel for the absolutely beautiful cover. I’m so grateful we were finally able to highlight your work in this way.

Thank you to The Collective members. Our event planners for hosting some of the coolest events on campus, our writers for turning creative ideas, emotions, and experiences into thoughtful written work, and our photographers for doing it all: documenting our events and producing their own original and creative shoots.
And especially thank you to my design team. I took a risk with a smaller team this semester, and they exceeded every expectation. We supported one another, pushed ideas further, and brought this issue to life with so much care.

A special thank you to Julissa, our President, for sticking with The Collective Magazine for as long as I have. We’ve grown together through this organization, and it means so much to work alongside someone who truly understands and cares about it.

I am endlessly grateful for this issue, my lovely exec team, every member, and everyone who has ever shown up to support our work. :’)

my artists book for my final project in my book arts class

my project is an accordion book with 3 spreads (6 pages) in the front and 2 spreads (4 pages) in the back. this book is a representation of how i’ve been handling grief and how it never really leaves. my childhood dog passed away 6 years ago and i am still reminded of him every day.

letterpress text in spanish reads “han pasado 6 años desde que mi perrito Atlas pasó y no ha pasado un día en que no pienso en el”

in english meaning “its been 6 years since my dog Atlas passed and not a day has gone by that i don’t think about him”

“wreak havoc” : a poster inspired by “The Obscene Typography Machine” by Philp B. Meggs (an assignment for my typography class) where he basically complains about how new technology and designers are destroying typography. Based off of his writing, he would’ve hated this poster and that’s why I made it!

I also had to write an essay describing his stance on deconstructivist type and my design choices. Here’s a bit of it to go along with the poster:

“Deconstructivist typography can be categorized as taking apart type and rearranging them in a stylistic way to emphasize their form. Meggs acknowledges that some deconstructivist designers do this well and with originality, but others are using such techniques with no thought or consideration behind their actions, ultimately resulting in “hack work”.

In my poster that is intended to encapsulate the spirit of this essay, I took inspiration from deconstructivism and its dissection of letter forms. I created a random grid layout and filled these spaces with certain phrases from the essay or random letters that were taken apart. It goes against the author’s strong feelings on keeping the original nature of typefaces and their legibility. I went about the project the way I did, because to Meggs, I may as well be a moron with a computer too. In my poster, it’s difficult to make out words and letters, since they’ve all been dissected and flipped around. I experimented with different letter forms and fonts, but decided to stick to Goudy Old Style, since it was mentioned in the essay. I messed with individual anchor points to ‘ruin’ and stylize the letters to my liking even more. I used a bright pink color as my background that was bold and called attention while adding rough texture overlays on top.”

an untitled letterpress print

this was a project for my letterpress class and my first time making a print with the letterpress by myself.

this process included transferring the image onto a linoleum block with wintergreen oil, carving for hours, setting up the type (hellenic 12 pt.) onto the letterpress alongside the block, inking the block and type, and making many adjustments along the way to get the correct placement and pressure.
