I’m Bo, a full-time freelance graphic designer based in Nottingham.
Creative Director @sidedoor.studio (creative communications powered by learning design)

I work across music, arts, and community spaces, including events, exhibitions, charities, and independent projects. Currently open to freelance work, especially supporting artists, musicians, and cultural spaces.

My recent focus is motion graphics, creating visuals for gigs, Spotify loops, and digital content, alongside a long-running hands-on approach combining collage, drawn type, and print. I’ve developed a strong practice in risograph and screenprint through a residency at Carousel.

I run bi-monthly artist events @sidedoorsocialnotts at People’s School Nottingham, creating a casual space for exhibition, performance, and connection.

MY NEW MOTION GRAPHICS SHOWREEL!
If you think you've seen some of this before, that's because you have but watch through the whole minute of the showreel to see loads of peaks of new projects and lots of motion graphics reinterpretations of old projects!

I’ve been really focusing on motion graphics lately, learning new software, trying things out, and actually just having so much fun with it. It’s made me feel a little bit more employable and a lot more proud of what I can do. This is just some of the work I’ve made over the past year, but at the rate things are going I’ll probably have a whole new reel in six months because I’m learning something new every day.

I’m opening up more time for freelance projects now. I’m happy to take on branding work, campaigns, logos, posters for events, and I’d especially love to do motion graphics for events and gigs. If you run events and have had any recent grants come through, I’d love to help level up your visuals and build something that really fits your atmosphere.

Outside of that, I’ve been working at Sidedoor as Creative Lead, which has been such a great opportunity. I’ve been able to do a mix of motion, branding, and pushing ideas with way more creative freedom than I ever expected this early on.

Here's a poster I made for @elahehraofi.art new film, The Forbidden Gender.

It'll be shown this Friday at @the___carousel as part of the Reaction exhibition closing party. If you're around, come along, it's free.

Projects like this are why I love design. Elahè and I spent time talking about the film, her experiences, and the stories of the ten Iranian women featured in it. Learning through listening, research and conversation to create something meaningful was one of the most rewarding parts of the process.

Two ideas shaped the poster. The first was that colour can be an act of resistance. Throughout the film, moments like wearing colourful clothing or revealing a small strand of dyed hair become quiet but powerful expressions of identity and defiance. That contrast between hope and the reality of life in Iran became the core idea of the poster.

The second was hair, which felt like a deeply personal symbol of identity, resistance and self-expression.

From there I built the poster physically. Drawing on Iranian art, especially the mirrored halls and the use of turquoise, I printed, cut, layered and tore imagery by hand before scanning it back in. In the screening poster (pink text), the torn paper reveals the colour beneath it; hope and resistance emerging.

To finish it, Elahè's cousin beautifully hand-wrote the Farsi title, and I created a matching hand-drawn English title so both languages felt equally considered.

Lies Told

Here are all 9 pieces from my exhibition which is currently on display at @thedrawingroomgallerynotts

“Lies Told” is a series of collages created simultaneously, each piece developing alongside the others through a constant process of layering, removing and rearranging. Rather than approaching the works individually, every sheet existed on my living room floor at the same time, allowing imagery, textures and phrases to move between compositions until they began to feel like one connected body of work.
The exhibition sits within a feeling I’ve struggled to shake recently: how is it going to get better? Not in a purely pessimistic sense, but in the numbness that comes from constantly witnessing crisis, genocide and lies from a distance. The body of work is called “Lies Told”, taken from the phrase lies told with the practiced ease of an old thief — the idea that repeated dishonesty eventually becomes ordinary, both for those telling the lies and those hearing them. Over time, misinformation, empty promises and false narratives begin to blur into the background noise of everyday life. Even blatant lies can seem to pass without consequence once they become familiar enough. The work isn’t intended as an accusation towards those not reacting to these lies; if anything, it reflects my own frustration with how easy it can feel to become passive, overwhelmed, or unsure what meaningful action even looks like anymore.
The making process itself was intentionally loose and instinctive. I spread every collected object, printed image and paper fragment across the floor, building compositions quickly and pulling them apart just as quickly. If a section wasn’t working, I would cut out the fragments I liked and reframe them elsewhere. That constant recycling and recombining became one of the most enjoyable parts of the project.

A welcoming, fun, and sunny (hopefully) evening of art, music, ideas and good company.
Expect warm summer light, beers (or whatever drink you fancy), and a room full of brilliant people sharing what they’ve been working on.

Sidedoor Social is a show and tell for creative work, unfinished ideas, passion projects, things that don’t quite fit anywhere else. You can exhibit work on the walls, or apply for a short slot to talk, perform, or share your process. All disciplines welcome — the weirder the better.

And if you’re not an artist, you’re still very much invited. Come along for the atmosphere, meet people, have a drink, and spend a summer evening surrounded by creativity.

Submissions are open now, but get them in early, we had way more interest than space last time. Tickets go live at the end of this week.

A poster I recently designed for @movers.venue and @refugeeroots

Very happy to have done some work for one of my favourite venues and so glad they chose me to do it for such a great cause!

Turn up to movers on Thursday, show your support to a very important charity and have a dance!

Support refugee roots and their amazing work supporting refugees throughout the UK in any way you can!

MY FIRST ART IN A GALLERY!

‘Lies Told’ is a series of 9 collage works, they are being shown at The Drawing Room Gallery from June 6th (next week).

Thanks so much to the Drawing Room for this opportunity.

Here is one of the 9 pieces, along with some cropped close-ups of some of the others as a little teaser. If you’re in town around Cobden Chambers, check it out. The work will be on display until the end of June.

Here is a segment of the description I wrote about the work:

"Lies Told with the practiced ease of an old thief brings together bold, black, digitally designed imagery and found fragments in a series of collaged works. It reflects on repeated exposure to dishonest narratives and how they settle into everyday life.
When delivered from positions of authority and so embedded in our day to day, it can feel futile to respond to these untruths.
Visually, the work draws heavily from the language of public information systems and instructional graphics, particularly the work of Margaret Calvert and the visual clarity of UK road signage. All imagery was created digitally before being printed onto a limited palette of papers. To contrast this controlled system, I incorporated found materials collected over time from Nottingham and trips to London and Berlin - old flyers, leaflets and fragments of old wheat-pasted posters" taken in Cobden Chambers by @designed.by.bo

Sidedoor Social #1 was such a success, so we’re doing it again… very soon!

Sidedoor Social is a relaxed show and tell for creative projects, a space to share passion projects, unfinished ideas, and work that doesn’t quite fit anywhere else. No pressure, no polish needed, just people showing what they care about.

You can exhibit work on the walls of the People's Hall, or apply for a short slot to talk, perform, or share your process.

All creative disciplines encouraged, the weirder the better!

New poster created for @liminalityuk
We worked together on a tight deadline to create something that felt bold, type based and really represented electronic music but still had the texture and feel of Falmouth and it's folky coastal feel.
It was also really fun to design for risograph again.

Thanks for this great project.
If anyone has any events posters/ branding/ motion graphics or album art etc DM me I'm currently open to doing some exciting work
