Imagine an island in the middle of the Pacific, 35 hours by boat from mainland Costa Rica, untouched, a picture-perfect time capsule of what it might have looked like a million years ago. Cliffs tower above you, crags carved out by a millennia of ferocious currents, waterfalls a hundred feet high, and the local residents, the birds, the boobies, cutting through the air like a formation of agile pterodactyls, hunting, feeding, nesting. This is Cocos Island.

But beneath the surface is where the real treasures lie. Cocos is known to host an array of incredible marine life, including an assortment of sharks, rays, and mammals that all call this place home. Fish school in the thousands. Dolphins dance and play between your bubbles. There is also a teeming reef beneath the waves, including coral and sponges, hosting crabs, frogfish, lobsters, eels and so much more.

But let’s face it – Cocos is about the schooling hammerheads. Descending to a site called ‘Alcyone’, I felt a current that was akin to a freight train slamming into me at 100 miles an hour. It was the first time in my life I ever felt a current that strong, but currents are a playground for sharks, so I knew I came to the right place. I had an unforgettable close encounter with a hammerhead, which, by no fault of his own, could not see directly in front of him and at the very last moment veered upwards as he felt the surge of my bubbles. I remember placing my hand on my heart and exhaling in awe, knowing this experience will stay with me forever.

I want to thank the wonderful people I met and dived with, who made this trip epic in every way. Cocos will always be in my heart!
