Many events, one week, and plenty of reasons to come together around architecture and design.

For Design Week Calgary 2026, we opened the doors to three very different experiences, each offering a chance to look a little closer at the spaces we make and the stories behind them. It was a lot!

At Before It Becomes Home, the unfinished façade of The Goodweather became its own projection surface. As night fell, sketches, models, historic research, emails, and construction drawings were projected back onto the building, revealing the years of thinking and making behind it.

Dinner with a Designer brought us around the table at Park by Sidewalk Citizen, where we shared the ideas, decisions, and lessons behind the project over a menu created specifically for the space. Great conversations and great food, just as the space was intended to be experienced.

We also hopped over to Contemporary Calgary to screen "The Space We Create", our doc about the making of The Aster in Banff. Thank you to @dan_hapton for curating the films and bringing them to the screen.

A special thank you to @dtalks_calgary for bringing Calgary Design Week together and creating space for these conversations across the city. We were stoked to be part of a week shaped by so many people who care deeply about architecture, design, and the places we share as Calgarians.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, asked questions, shared ideas, and made each event feel like a genuine exchange.

Two weeks later, and we're still thinking about Design Week Calgary.

We're grateful to have been part of an experience that brought so many curious minds, thought-provoking conversations, and beautiful work into the same event. We're especially thankful for the panelists, audience, and team involved in bringing our discussion, Breaking Down The Wall, to life.

Breaking Down The Wall and Design Week Calgary reminded us that great design doesn't happen in a vacuum; design happens through community talks, installations, sculptures, photos, drawings, and a willingness to engage with things a little differently.

Thanks to everyone who joined us and made our event memorable, including @o2planningdesign, @tworowarchitect, @bigcityarchitect, @designweekcalgary, @dtalks_calgary, and @contemporarycalgary

🔲Sponsor Spotlight: @contemporarycalgary🔲

We’re continuing our sponsor spotlight series with Contemporary Calgary.

Why did you choose to sponsor Design Week Calgary?

As a contemporary art gallery, we're committed to creating a place of wonder and belonging where everyone is invited to imagine, learn, and understand one another and the world we share through the power of contemporary art. Supporting creative organizations that shape culture and spark conversation is central to this commitment. Design Week Calgary brings together designers, artists, architects, makers, and the broader community, creating opportunities for collaboration and new ways of thinking.

We value the work Design Week Calgary is doing to strengthen and celebrate Calgary's creative community, and we're proud to support an organization that champions critical dialogue, collaboration, and design across disciplines. DWC is helping put Calgary on the map as a destination for contemporary creativity by showcasing and connecting local, national, and international voices. Their work not only elevates the city's design community but also fosters meaningful exchange across disciplines.

Providing space for DWC is a natural extension of our commitment to making creativity accessible, investing in Calgary's creative future, and supporting a vibrant cultural ecosystem.

How does supporting Design Week Calgary align with your organization's values or goals?

Contemporary Calgary is dedicated to creating a welcoming, engaging, relevant, and collaborate environment by fostering creative practice, encouraging critical conversations, and making space for diverse perspectives. Supporting Design Week Calgary aligns with these values by creating opportunities for creative exchange, increasing public engagement with design and the arts, and helping build a more connected and collaborative cultural community. We believe that when artists and designers come together, they enrich one another's work and contribute to a more dynamic and creative Calgary.

Another year to learn and grow. There are a lot to learn from for my first installation and it’s definitely one of the fun parts of the process. If I told my 2024 self that I would do something like this for Design Week Calgary at Contemporary Calgary 2 years later, I wouldn’t know how to respond. But thank you to the @designweekcalgary team - always a pleasure to work with the fam - and the volunteers that helped me out. Taking note of all the feedback and keep going🙏 taken in Contemporary Calgary by @designweekcalgary

⬛️ In Conversation: Designing “In Tune” ⬛️

We spoke with Cristian Mera (@fluffycrust), the designer behind the Design Week Calgary 2026 volunteer t-shirt and sticker pack, about collage, connection, and the small moments that shape how we experience the world.

◾️ Can you tell us about the concept behind the volunteer t-shirt and sticker pack designs for Design Week Calgary 2026? ◾️

I wanted to lean into my collage style and create something that felt personal. The theme "In Tune" immediately made me think about the things that make me feel connected to myself and my surroundings. Every element in the artwork represents something that brings me joy, whether it's music, nature, french vanilla lattes, old video games, basketball, Calgary landmarks, or just little everyday moments.

The idea is that everyone has their own version of being "in tune." These objects might seem random at first, but together they tell a story about finding happiness in the things around you.

◾️ What is the inspiration behind your work? What inspires you as a multidisciplinary designer and illustrator? ◾️

I think nostalgia is probably my biggest inspiration. I love making work that makes people stop for a second and look again, whether that's because of the colours, the composition, or some surreal little detail they didn't notice at first.

Music is a huge part of my creative process too. It honestly feels like a warm blanket. Most of my artwork ends up reflecting whatever I'm listening to at the time, almost like I'm translating a song into an image. Sometimes it's energetic, sometimes it's quiet, but music always finds its way into the work.

I'm also inspired by the people around me and by Calgary itself. I think this city has so much untapped creative potential, and it's exciting to see more people pushing boundaries and creating work that's unique to this place.

Huge thanks to Cristian for creating something so fun, personal, and full of character for our DWC2026 volunteer tees + sticker packs.
